Sybil – fragmenting into many personalities to survive

Shirley Ardell Mason, whose story about an abusive childhood became a hot-topic book about the multiple personalities of Sybil and then a movie in the 1970s with Sally Ann Field and Joanne Woodward, was born one hundred years ago.

The dramatization of her deeply disturbing early childhood memories set off a viciously fought controversy about whether the condition existed at all which is still running today. Various psychological professionals and others have gone to great, almost desperate, lengths to deny it was anything other than a fiction, invented by a fame-hungry psychiatrist.

While it is true that it was over-diagnosed at one point, there is no doubt that Dissociative Identity Disorder as it is now known can be adopted as a strategy to defend against massive and terrifying early abuse, usually by the primary caretaker, normally the mother. Although MPD or DID is an extreme disorder most of us have traces of ‘splitting’ in our everyday interactions, some more than others. But for it to extend as far as creating separate defensive personalities, there has to be massive psychological trauma such as being tortured as a baby.

Quite why this sets off alarm bells in some people’s heads I have never understood but the denial lobby is alive, well and determined to blow out of the water any suggestion that what??  — the psyche is so vulnerable it fragments under severe stress and unbearable fear. It seems to me a skillful adaptation for a psyche under mind-bending pressure. The kinds of stories that DID patients relate are often beyond most people’s capacity to witness.

Shirley Mason (Sybil) was born 25 January 1923 3am Dodge Center, Minnesota, and her mother was reportedly diagnosed with schizophrenia and deemed “bizarre” by neighbours; and Shirley had several episodes of blackouts and emotional breakdowns as an adult.  She had a quick witted 3rd house Sun Mercury in Aquarius and later became an art teacher.

Her Mercury opposed a 9th house Neptune and squared onto a 12th house Jupiter; and she had a Water Grand Trine of Jupiter trine an 8th house Pluto trine Uranus on her IC. So she would live in her own private bubble to blot out reality with a Water Grand Trine plus the Jupiter Neptune which would make her gloss over unpleasantness.

A strong Jupiter as she had would make it possible to overcome difficulties. Of Fred West’s children – the UK child abuser – the ones who survived had strong Jupiters.

Shirley did have a 4th house Mars square her 8th house Pluto suggesting anger, violence and fear in her childhood. Her Taurus Moon was on the midpoint of her Uranus IC trine the 8th house Pluto which suggests a mother who was unpredictable, unstable and wrestling with her own demons from that 8th house Pluto.

I have seen worse charts and you can’t diagnose psychological conditions per se from a chart. What can be problematic about early memory as was discovered with second and even third generation children of Holocaust survivors is that the parents’ unspoken trauma can be handed down as quasi-memories to the children. So at times the trauma may not be the individual’s but an unconsciously transmitted memory from the past.

Her psychiatrist, Cornelia Wilbur, 26 August 1908, was a sharp-eyed Sun, Mars, Mercury in Virgo – with her Pluto as well as Venus Neptune in Cancer falling in Shirley’s 8th house – which would make for a deep connection though perhaps also a confused one.  There’s no proof either way.

Whatever the truth – and mother being schizophrenic and Shirley suffering blackouts and breakdowns prior to therapy does point to severe early trauma – it did shine a light on the byzantine workings of minds under pressure.

Lisa Marie Presley – poor little rich girl ++ Elvis’s chart marks her passing

Lisa Marie Presley has died of a cardiac arrest aged 54, after a high-drama lifetime of revolving marriages and relationships, drug and latterly opioid abuse, and most recently the suicide of one of her sons in 2020.

She inherited Elvis’s multi-millions as a child and lost most of it, married Michael Jackson and briefly Nicholas Cage, and was involved in the Church of Scientology through her mother Priscilla. She made a clean break from the church in 2014, though she had been distancing herself from the organization for years. “They were taking my soul, my money, my everything,” she said of her eventual decision to leave.

She was born 1 February 1968 5.01pm Memphis, Tennessee and had a 7th house Aquarius Sun sextile a forced-to-be-self-reliant Saturn in Aries. But what dominated her chart was an 8th house Moon Mars in Pisces opposition Uranus Pluto in Virgo – driven by turbulent unconscious forces she didn’t understand and couldn’t control, messing up her financial judgement as well as her emotional life. That stormy opposition was trine/sextile Neptune in her 4th hinting at the sacrifices demanded by her family connections that she could never escape and never manage successfully.

Elvis – 8 January 1935 4.35 am Tupelo, MS, – had a powerful and influential chart, focused onto a rock n’ roll, unconventional Uranus in his performing 5th. His Uranus was conjunct her Midheaven – so his talent and showbusiness image arguably skewed her direction in life though she did record various singles and one successful album.

Her relationship with her mother Priscilla was tense with Priscilla’s 8th house Pluto opposition Lisa Marie’s Sun. They had a complicated and competitive relationship chart.

On Lisa Marie’s chart at the moment, tr Pluto was square her Midheaven and approaching the square to her Progressed Mars – which hinted at a massive change in her life.

Being the product of fame, gzillions and a dynasty isn’t easy.

ADD ON: Astrology Frank Clifford has pointed out on Facebook the extraordinary line up on Elvis’s chart with his only child dying.  His Solar Arc Venus is exactly conjunct his Uranus in his 5th house of children; and his Solar Arc Uranus has moved to be exactly conjunct his Pluto  in his 8th house, which amongst other things rules death and rebirth. And his Solar Arc Neptune is conjunct his Ascendant also exactly. Posthumous influences are often spot on and raise the question of exactly what the birth chart reflect.

Michael Flatley – a super-charged New Moon in Cancer

Michael Flatley, famous for his Irish production Riverdance, is sadly suffering from an “aggressive form of cancer” it has been announced. He shot to fame with Riverdance, which first appeared as an intermission piece during the 1994 Eurovision interval in Dublin. He then choreographed and danced in a full length show.

After 25 years it has been seen by three billion people worldwide on television and his stage shows have played to more than 60 million people in 60 countries. He gave up performing a few years back because of physical strain. Last year he launched a Lord Of The Dance tour to raise money for the humanitarian effort in Ukraine.

He was born into an Irish family with a dancer mother in Chicago on 16 July 1958 at 11.55am.He has a 10th house New Moon in creative and ambitious Cancer which squares onto an exuberantly enthusiastic and high-vitality Mars in Aries opposition Jupiter North Node in Libra – so he was always going to make his mark.

His Mars is in a disciplined trine to Saturn, in a showbizzy opposition to Neptune and an ultra-determined trine to Pluto. His Venus in sociable Gemini is trine Jupiter, sextile Mercury in Leo giving him a flair for a popular spectacle.

His Solar Arc Mars is moving to square his Pluto over the next eighteen months which will be challenging for him along with a frustrating tr Pluto square his Mars for the second year running.

Sad news and one can only hope for the best.

Jeff Beck – a genius on the guitar

Jeff Beck, known as the guitarist’s guitarist has died at 78. He’s described as a ‘rare musician, an absolute master of his instrument, and just about the most self-effacing rock supremo to ever grace a stage.’

He evidently shirked fame, did not chase hits and disappeared from the limelight for long periods if he did not feel creative. He turned down the chance to join the Rolling Stones at the height of their 70’s superstardom because he considered what they were playing to be too undemanding.

He was born 24 June 1944 and had a serious though charming Sun, Venus and Saturn in Cancer all square a musical Neptune; with his Neptune in a creative trine to Uranus, sextile an influential Pluto. His enthusiastic Mars Jupiter in Leo was sextile his Mercury with a Leo Moon lurking nearby.

There’s no birth time but his flamboyant Leo planets must have been muted to some extent in a hidden house.

[Is it just my imagination or are there a fair number of older musicians dying at the moment?]

Bolsonaro to Prince Harry – Neptune heads for the rocks

Jair Bolsonaro, the defeated far-right Brazilian president, lurking in Florida is facing calls for his extradition after his supporters stormed the Supreme Federal Court and Congress buildings.

A pro-Trumper and mutual backslapper, he’s described as a populist with fascist tendencies and he’s another of the Jupiter in hard aspect to Neptune types and was sworn in on a Jupiter square Neptune in 2019.

There is something swirling at the back of my mind about Brexit, Trump and that whole Jupiter Neptune energy around in square in 2016, extending on to the Boris Johnson, Kevin McCarthy Jupiter Neptune opposition – and the rise of populist hi-jackers of democracy.    The siren call of Neptune leading to shipwrecks.

Before leaving Bolsonara – his personal chart looks very stormy ahead with tr Uranus heading to make an explosive conjunction to his Mars in Taurus from the middle of this March rattling up his beyond-stubborn Fixed Grand Cross. Uranus then proceeds to hit his Venus and Saturn before mid 2023 and his Pluto in 2024 – which will substantially upend his life.  Plus his Solar Arc Mars will conjunct his Uranus in late 2023/early 2024. Tr Pluto is also in a confused/devastated square to his Neptune throughout 2023.

Astrologers tend to waft off into oceanic flights of fancy when it comes to Jupiter Neptune but it’s beginning to haunt me.  Even Prince Harry – may his name never be mentioned again this century!! –  has a Jupiter Neptune conjunction in the 12th. And he must represent something in the zeitgeist to have attracted this amount of attention.

In the money world Jupiter Neptune is associated with financial bubbles bursting as the dream comes apart at the seams and hopes/speculative investments hit the deck with a thud.

Andre Barbault thought conjunctions of Jupiter and Neptune brought “a swing to the left” with “democratic, socialist, or even more or less revolutionary” tendencies.

Kind of maybe with the Jupiter Neptune conjunction in Pisces in early 2022. But it has hardly brought an ‘inspiring vision — to — provide a counterbalance to the difficult despair brought by by the pandemic.’ The Ukraine invasion, a Jupiter Neptune in Pisces event – an overly optimistic dream from Putin’s malevolent playbook – certainly proved that hope is no match for harsh reality. The Ukrainians were better fighters.

There is something odd swirling out there in the ether. Maybe it is my Saturnine soul yearning for a reality check – and preferably not after the event. Getting carried away on other people’s flights of fantasy is not good.

This is all thinking in progress – any thoughts and clarity welcomed.

Harry’s road to nowhere – no forgive and forget + Meghan ditto and ditto

Will the hole Harry is digging for himself get deeper? Regrettably the answer seems to be a resounding yes. Whatever justifiable grievances he has had are being buried under a welter of half truths, wholly untruths and confabulated narratives that don’t fit the facts. His agitated, hostile and prickly dismissal of any other version suggests a pathological need to live in his own bubble of reality.

Saturn moving into Pisces from this March for two years is going to put a damper, not to say descend a deluge, on all of Harry’s relationships with Will, his father, Camilla, Kate and Princess Anne. His attacks and bitter dislike of Camilla will, worsen in 2024, with an eruption or two through this year.

On his personal chart late 2024 looks like bringing a seismic upheaval in his plans for the future with his Solar Arc Pluto conjunct his Uranus with a sharp reality check in 2025 from Solar Arc Saturn square his Sun.

His relationship chart with Meghan has been under severe pressure through 2022  and before with tr Pluto square the composite Saturn Pluto and now opposition the composite Moon. It is a bond that only holds while the resentment is aimed outwards at others, rather than being addressed as a dynamic of their relationship. But that can’t hold for ever. Tr Pluto is back opposing the composite Moon from the middle of this month and on and off till late 2023. With tr Pluto conjunct their composite Midheaven at 29 Capricorn from mid February on and off till late 20924 which will bring heavy discussions about future direction.  Tr Pluto conjunct Midheaven can destroy reputations. Tr Saturn will oppose their composite Sun from late March on and off through 2023 which will bring a sense of separation. 2024 sees tr Neptune opposition the composite Mars for a feeling of failure about the relationship and that rolls through into 2025/26.

Meghan’s Sun/Moon midpoint at 8 degrees Virgo catches the tr Saturn opposition in 2024 which will cast a chill if not a separation on their togetherness. Harry’s Sun/Moon midpoint doesn’t catch a Saturn conjunction till 2027 but it isn’t unusual for marriage partners to react at different times to a split, depending on their psychological capacity for letting go.

Meghan has her Solar Arc Sun square her Neptune now which is undermining and confused and is into her mid-life crisis in 2024 which can often lead to hasty decisions and with tr Uranus moving into her 11th she will be radically changing her outlook on future plans. 2026 looks undermining on the domestic and family front.

She does have tr Jupiter moving across her Midheaven from this March until May 2024 which is usually successful and high profile on the career front.

2028/29 look car-crash years for her with disruptive and explosive Solar Arcs.

Their wedding chart always did look turbulent with Mercury Uranus square Mars and a Sun trine Pluto and trine Mars and Moon opposition Pluto. It’ll be under considerable stress with tr Pluto moving into Aquarius upending the Uranus in square from late March and worsening in 2024/25 with tr Pluto conjunct the wedding Mars.

There is nothing to say they absolutely have to part company but given her marital history and his family history it could be more likely and there are enormous strains coming up.

ADD ON: Wilt. Meghan may write her own memoir. Spare us. There is something sick, almost malevolent about the whole sorry, sordid and regrettably riveting spectacle.

Meghan’s relationship chart with Kate with a controlling composite Sun Pluto conjunction has been under strain for some time but worsens dramatically from late this March as tr Pluto squares the composite Sun for two years – aggravated further in 2024 by tr Uranus rattling up the explosive Venus Uranus square Mars Moon.

Camilla will also be wilting vis a vis the Montecito Madame through 2023 and more so in 2024.

Meghan’s relationship chart with father-in-law Charles will be high tension this spring; and heading fast downhill in 2024 with tr Neptune opposition the composite Venus as well as tr Pluto trine the Mars for a frustrated and angry mood; with worse in 2025 as tr Neptune Saturn in Aries square the Sun Mars.

A folie a deux that feeds off envy, hatred and vengeance

The Murdochs – a Shakespearan family squall

A titanic family struggle is waging amongst another tribe where sibling rivalry could break out into open warfare when the patriarch dies. The Murdoch clan is braced for a bitter fall out with the two senior sons, the named successor Lachlan and spurned James at odds, with sisters Prue and Elisabeth, who also have a say, keeping their loyalties veiled pro tem.

Plans to merge Fox and News Corp which is causing angst amongst other shareholders is thought to be a Lachlan move to shore up his control but is likely to run into heavy opposition from left-wing, liberal-minded James.

An insider said “There is going to be a lot of jockeying for position and a lot of ugliness, and Lachlan will not get away with maintaining the status quo.”  Rupert Murdoch himself acknowledged in 2000, “If the kids fought hard enough, the whole thing would break down; there is no mechanism against that happening.”

What doesn’t help – though it is intriguing – is that all four siblings have their Mars in a different Fixed sign, all in hard aspect to each other. Lachlan has Mars in ornery Aquarius, James Mars in vengeful Scorpio, Elisabeth Mars in flamboyant Leo and Prue Mars in Taurus. All are heavyweights, not inclined to budge when the chips are down.

Lachlan, 8 September 1971, a Sun Venus in Virgo, clashes with James, 13 December 1972, whose Sagittarius Sun opposition Saturn squares Lachlan’s Sun Venus – a chilly, critical interface. Their relationship chart has a struggle-to-the-death composite Pluto square Mars with no quarter given – tr Neptune Saturn in Aries in 2025 will stretch that dislike to the limit.

Lachlan does fare better with Elisabeth, 22 August 1968, since her Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Pluto in Virgo favour his Virgo Sun though there is still a ratchety, irritable composite Mars Saturn conjunction in their relationship chart so not all sweetness and light.

But Elizabeth fares even less well with James since that relationship chart has a composite Mars Pluto conjunction which is being undermined between now and 2025.

Prue’s birth date is questionable – maybe 12 August 1958 from a genealogy site. If accurate it makes her a feisty Sun Uranus in Leo trine Saturn and square Mars. She won’t be seeing eye to eye with Lachlan over the next two years.

Being born into a dynasty isn’t all champagne and roses.

Prince Harry – shooting himself in the foot ++ extra thoughts

The Times

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear – the expected car crash happened. What possessed his ghost writer, publishers, friends (does he still have any?) to advise Prince Harry to publish such an industrial quantity of petty gripes that make him look utterly pathetic. He’ll never live it down and it’ll haunt him for the rest of his days – and that’s just the personal stuff. The Taliban are a different order of stupidity. It reminds me of one of the letters that therapists suggest clients write to their family which is NEVER to be sent. Get it off your chest and keep it to yourself.

He knows he’s screwed up – his Solar Arc Sun is exactly conjunct his 9th house (publishing/opinionated) natal Pluto grinding him to a complete halt and tr Pluto moves to square both from late March 2023, which will put him through the mill still further and pound him till late 2024.

He does have tr Saturn moving through the lowest point of his low-profile First Quadrant which is often when unresolved psychological issues surface to be sorted out (hopefully) but is a period when staying less visible is advisable. His tr Pluto square his natal Pluto from March this year is also the start of his mid life crisis (38 to 42/3 years old) which is followed by tr Neptune square natal Neptune and then tr Uranus opposition his natal Uranus by 2027. Carl Jung thought that embracing the mid life crisis and going through a painful process of transformation which pulls away the past is what makes the second half of life vibrant and fulfilling. Ducking the challenge leads to stagnation.

He’s also got multiple other tricky influences – two affecting his future direction are tr Uranus opposition his Midheaven this April for a sharp change of plans; with an indecisive, undermining tr Neptune square his Solar Arc Midheaven from mid next month on and off into 2024. Plus an emotionally upsetting Solar Arc Uranus square his Venus exactly now; and a family disappointment/confusion Solar Arc Moon opposition his Neptune. Plus more family upsets from this June onwards with tr Uranus conjunct his Moon.

He ought to be down a rabbit hole and stay there to sort out his scattered wits.

Prince William has one confused/disappointed midpoint but on the whole looks upbeat and keen to push on. What is showing is tr Saturn square his focal point 5th house Venus in Taurus for a few days late this month into February. It isn’t necessarily sibling related but it suggests a sadness or separation and however relieved he may be that it has backfired on Harry it will make him grieve for what was once a reasonable connection and be embarrassed for his brother’s screw up.  William is highly emotional with a New Moon in Cancer and reactive with his Mercury trine Mars and opposition Uranus – he is renowned for having a temper as indeed many Royals, including back generations had, including the late Queen’s father George V1.

What is notable is that Harry’s Pluto is conjunct William’s Jupiter Midheaven – and if ever there was a power-struggling, oneupmanship tussle that’s it. Harry’s grinding and vengeful resentment from Pluto in Scorpio, which CANNOT let go, compels him to damage/destroy William’s success. For all Harry’s early protestations that he never wanted to be king, he really cannot bear that his brother will be.

J.R. Moehringer, the ghost writer, 7 December 1964, is talented but probably (certainly) a bad fit in the circumstances. He is a Sun Sagittarius square a volcanic and angry Pluto, Mars, Uranus in Virgo so he would not be a calming force through the research/writing, quite the reverse. And he’s also (sigh) one of the Jupiter in Taurus opposition Neptune (and Venus) bunch which falls across Harry’s IC/MC axis = scandals caused by instability – or over hopefulness. That relationship looks fraught exactly now and on for the next three years.

Harry’s relationship with Ted Sarandos of Netflix isn’t great ahead (see previous posts in search) and Oprah looks to be backing off big time.

Exhausting and toe-curling to watch.

Add On; There are IT gremlins afoot. I keep trying to post the below as a comment and it disappears!!! So have put in as an add on.

Leading on from a comment by Yanette on the Sibling Rivalry post below:
‘ Harry was drink drug using from @age 16. His book talks about cocaine from age 17, cannabis and magic mushrooms. Long term drink/drug use from adolescence into adulthood can lead to serious mental health issues surfacing in late 20s and 30s. Add to that possible PTSD or similar from Diana’s death and/or his time in the army (I’m not diagnosing, just a guess),and yes it makes sense it first came to a head in the period of his 2nd Afghanistan deployment (@age 28/29) and leaving the army (@31 years old).’

And he’s still using. He merrily – evidently – describes have a good sniff of nitrous oxide/laughing gas provided for birthing mothers when Archie was being born. Acc to the report it emptied the supply. He brushes it off as a joke.

I have friends with kids with drug problems and they head into their forties still not having got their act together. Kids in their late teens and early 20s still have fairly malleable brain structures which drugs can mess up.

Astrologically the two major transition – grow up – phases are the First Saturn Return at 29 and the mid life crisis 38 to 42. I remember my first Saturn Return as fairly traumatic but I got through it and got a grip thereafter.
Harry seems to have ducked both. If his mental trauma did all start to surface in his late twenties to early thirties that was when tr Pluto was crossing his Ascendant – beginning an immensely helpful and insightful phase of many years. But that clearly didn’t work too well for him.
I’d reckon the strong possibility is that it was early and continued drug use that is his key problem. Plus perhaps PTSD on top. Both of them require specific therapeutic intervention, tailored to the problem. Touchy feely or explore your early environment therapy isn’t what is needed.

Norman Mailer – Jupiter Neptune with a cruel streak

Novelist Norman Mailer was once lauded as a high IQ prodigy, described (by himself and others) as ‘the best writer in the USA’, and paid prodigious sums of money by publishers after his initial success of The Naked and the Dead. But ultimately he came to be seen as ‘imbecilic and ludicrous’, writing ‘worthlessly derivative’ books. Evelyn Waugh once called him “a swarthy gangster straight out of a madhouse”.

A new biography is no more complementary, describing him as ‘a spoilt mummy’s boy, puffed up with pride, arrogance and egocentricity, who went out of his way to appear impulsive and daring — who was always concerned to shock and impress with his creed of unrestrained hedonism.”

He was born 31 January 1923 9.05 am Long Branch, New Jersey, and what is interesting apropos recent comments is that he had a marked Jupiter Neptune aspect tied into a T Square with his Aquarius Sun. ‘He did not wish to be answerable for his actions and opinions; he never treated anyone with respect; he made things up about himself shamelessly — and expected everyone to subscribe to the myths. Mailer wanted to exist without responsibility.’ Slight hints of Boris Johnson?

He also had a Water Grand Trine of an 8th house lucky Jupiter in Scorpio trine Uranus in the 12th trine Pluto in the 4th. Water Grand Trines are creative but tend to exist in a fantasy world and often don’t connect well with reality.

Where Mailer’s nastier streak came from was a Mars in Aries square Pluto. He revelled in upsetting people so wrote about mangled bodies, perverse sexual desires, cannibalism, mass murder, incest, coprophilia and sodomy. He regularly backhanded spouses (of whom he had six), kicked one in the  belly and stabbed his second wife with a knife for which he was, astonishingly, given a suspended sentence.

A combination of Mars Pluto brutality added to the overwheening self-confidence of Jupiter with delusional Neptune thrown in and a Water Grand Trine – it’s quite a chart.
