Actor Gérard Depardieu – ‘the best and worst of France’- with a cast-iron liver and one-time buddy of Putin has a new well-received film out. The miracle is he’s still alive, having reputedly once downed 14 bottles of wine in one binge and still smoking after a quadruple heart bypass some years back, plus multiple motorcycle crashes.  He exiled himself from France over high taxation rates, buddied up with Putin, who he reckoned was a hoodlum like himself, though they have recently fallen out after his direct criticism over Ukraine.  A recent allegation of sexual assault against him is still under investigation and by his own admissions there were several instances of rape early in his life.

  The star of Cyrano de Bergerac, Jean de Florette (and the immensely popular Asterix and Obelix film franchise) he is a polarising figure but still dear to the French heart. Now 73 he ‘has achieved an almost mythic quality. At his best, he’s a thrilling, disruptive and almost dangerous performer’ – “both rude and so refined, rough and full of grace, uneducated and very learned, gargantuan and ascetic.” And has been forgiven for his failings because of his disarming candour about his lifestyle and temperament.

  He was born 27 December 1948 8am Chateauroux, France  into profound poverty, with illiterate alcoholic parents. He left home to move in with a pair of streetwalkers when he was 13, flirted with petty crime, was a male prostitute and a grave robber  before stumbling into acting in his mid teens and discovering classic literature.

  What saved him would be a lucky Jupiter Sun Mercury in ambitious Capricorn in his 1^st house giving him unshakeable self-confidence and an ebullient personality. His Sun, Jupiter, Mercury also trine a hard-working Saturn in the well-informed 9^th so he would be keen to make up the educational deficits of his early life. His determined Mars in Capricorn in his 2^nd house of finances as well would give him a driving urge to get out of the pit of his childhood and with Uranus trine his Midheaven he would be blessed with an innovative spirit.  His seductive Scorpio Moon would give him a brooding sexuality when younger. Though his emotional life, not surprisingly, has been as chaotic as the rest of his life with Uranus on his Descendant and a can-be-compulsive Venus square Saturn.

  His Pluto in the 8^th is interesting since it does occur with movie stars who can project a powerful aura and image, though it isn’t an easy placing bringing a life filled with out-of-control events.

  He has several well-aspected Harmonic charts –  his get—a-life-together 5H; his pleasure-seeing 9H; wheel of fortune and self-defeating 10H; victim 12H and super-star22H.

  His story is not dissimilar to Edith Piaf, the French singer – ‘Non, Je ne regrette rien’ – who was born 19 December 1915 5am Paris, literally in the streets of Paris, the illegitimate child of a chanteuse and a street acrobat. Abandoned by her mother she spent her early years in a brothel in Normandy run by her father’s family and then in her early teens became a street singer in Paris.

   She became one of the most famous and beloved entertainers in Paris but her life was plagued by drugs, alcohol and overwork. She had several car accidents, attempted suicides, four drug cures, two episodes of delirium tremens, ulcers, jaundice, seven operations, three hepatic comas, spells of madness, two bouts with bronchial pneumonia and one with pulmonary oedema.  She died before she was 50.

  Like Depardieu, she had an 8^th house Pluto, which gives great resourcefulness though also bring situations requiring courage and endurance.  Her 2^nd house Sagittarius Sun would give her a liking for money though not always an ability to handle it well. She had an unloved Venus Saturn hard aspect like him, a testament to her unloved childhood.

  All rose to great prominence despite or maybe because of the grit-in-the-oyster from less than perfect beginnings.

The economic hit from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pales into insignificance compared to the potential damage from a similar standoff with China over Taiwan. Tensions have been rumbling ominously recently, with Japan last year giving notice that it would support the USA in defending Taiwan. And this week China demanded the US immediately cancels its latest arms sale to Taiwan, worth an estimated $108 million. Nancy Pelosi intends to visit Taiwan next month in a show of support, which is causing concern in the White House with her visit being described by Beijing as “malicious provocation.”

  A standoff with China would cause an “existential crisis” for the German car industry with one in three of its cars being sold on the Chinese mainland. VW makes half its profits there. Apple made 20% of its revenues in China last year with AstraZeneca, the UK drugs giant, not far behind. Apple also relies on a long list of China-based suppliers for components – as do other tech giants such as Microsoft, Google and Intel. A host of fashion retailers, including H&M, Zara, Gap and Calvin Klein, rely on a string of material suppliers in the country, which is the largest producer of cotton in the world. Nike has 102 factories in China while JCB, the British manufacturer of tractors, diggers and other machines, would also be caught in the collateral damage.

  With Germany as their “Achilles Heel” the EU would have much less room for manoeuvre; though some analysts believe Beijing would not risk a full-blown invasion given how much they could lose commercially themselves. What seems inevitable in future is a large amount of “decoupling” between the West and China.

The end/transformation of globalization – what comes next?

  Details of past Taiwan and Japanese crises/conflicts with China are in previous posts: 9 July 2021 and 1 October 2020. 28 degrees Cardinal does seem to be a sensitive spot for Chinese flare-ups and tr Pluto will be conjunct the China 1912 Uranus and square the China Aries North Node, both at 28 degrees, through this year on and off till late 2023.

  Xi Jinping’s Term chart, 24 October 2017 12.30 pm, does indicate a confident to over-confident push picking up from March 2023 on and off through 2025 with tr Pluto square the Sun Jupiter; with ruthless edge from tr Pluto trine Mars in 2023/24. It could pick up earlier since tr Pluto will conjunct the Term Uranus from this August and it will resonate up through the Term Sun Jupiter. Though he’d be unwise to chance his arm this year with an uncertain tr Neptune square the Term Saturn until February 2023.  

 The China 1912 chart is on high alert from 2021 through till late 2023 with tr Pluto pulling on the Uranus Neptune North Node T Square; but also confused and evasive through 2022/2023 with tr Neptune square the Mercury opposition Pluto; and over-reactive in 2024 with tr Uranus in a disruptive, explosive conjunction to the Mars.

  Relations with Japan are super-stressed 2022 to 2025 with tr Pluto conjunct the composite Mercury this year, then the Sun and Venus so their connection will be facing immense pressures and challenges.

  The USA and China won’t be a happy mix in 2023/24 with a discouraging and immoveable tr Pluto opposition the composite Saturn; and upheavals come 2025.  But they will be worse with Germany and the EU in 2023/24 and in the immediate years thereafter.

  The tectonic plates are shifting in unexpected ways with the celestial gear change between 2023 to 2026 and beyond – by which time Pluto will be in Aquarius, Neptune in Aries and Uranus in Gemini. Interesting times. Sigh.  

Much excitement about the Jennifer Lopez Ben Affleck up-the-golden-staircase moment as they got hitched at the witching hour on Saturday, the romantic frisson only tainted by the trashy Las Vegas venue. Two Leos both with Scorpio Moons – what could possibly go wrong? J-Lo has her Sun/Moon midpoint (the marriage significator) conjunct unpredictable, changeable Uranus which has led her through a merry-go-round of revolving relationships.

  The wedding chart, assuming just after midnight, has a controlling Pluto in the 10^th opposition a 4^th house Sun Mercury – a dual pointer to a need for public influence and a strong streak of possessiveness. And that squares onto the Ascendant. The light-hearted Venus in Gemini is in an illusory square to Neptune and a sensible trine to Saturn; with a high-tension Saturn square Uranus, hinting at differing moods and agendas.

  Their relationship chart has an optimistic composite Sun square Jupiter; with a passionate Venus square Pluto and a chained-together Pluto trine Saturn with Saturn in a suspicious opposition to Neptune.

  Neither have a good track record in relationships but sometimes even reprobates settle in their middle years. They will have to negotiate a disappointing and decidedly edgy patch through 2024 when tr Neptune opposes Ben’s Sun/Moon midpoint and squares the composite Venus; and 2025 when tr Uranus shakes up the composite Saturn opposition Neptune.  

It’s a Hollywood marriage. Nuff said. 

Anthony Fauci, a familiar figure in the news during the pandemic is back as concerns about new variants arise and infection rates spike again. Though vaccinations and boosters appear to reduce the risk of severe disease.

  Fauci is a vibrant 82 year old (like Nancy Pelosi) who has been in the public health sector in various capacities for more than fifty years and has acted as an advisor to every U.S. president since Ronald Reagan. He is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and has made contributions to HIV/AIDS research and other immunodeficiency diseases, as a research scientist and head of the NIAID. He has been at the forefront of U.S. efforts to contend with viral diseases like SARS, the Swine flu, MERS, Ebola as well. Or two decades he was one of the world’s most frequently cited scientists across all scientific journals.

  Born 24 December 1940 in New York with a pharmacist father, he is a practical and ambitious Capricorn Sun square Neptune in medically-inclined Virgo and trine a lucky and hard-working Jupiter Saturn in Taurus. His Jupiter Saturn may oppose a Scorpio Moon and square Pluto. Earthy, enduring, in it for the long haul with so much Fixed energy (think Queen and David Attenborough). Jupiter Saturn for some can raise them to dizzy heights in the public realm as they combine idealism with pragmatism. Pluto on the point of a T square gives immense perseverance and the ability (at best) to uncover fundamental truths so can be invaluable for research. Though it often arouses resistance and hostility from others. He also has a doubly-determined Mars in Scorpio in a high-octane opposition to Uranus so he’s a risk-taker by nature.

  His get-it-together 5^th Harmonic is well aspected; as is his humanitarian 9^th, healer 12H and global-name 22H.

  He may slow down by 2024 when his Solar Arc Sun oppose his Neptune and his Solar Arc Saturn is conjunct his Pluto; with the 1925 tr Neptune Saturn in Aries (sometimes associated with epidemics) square his Sun – he’ll either be in the thick of the next one or deciding to withdraw and wind down.

  He has been collaborating since early on with Bill Gates over Covid leading to all manner of whacko baseless conspiracy theories.

 Fauci’s Pluto, Jupiter Saturn and Scorpio Moon connect with Gates’ Scorpio Sun; with Fauci’s determined-researcher Pluto conjunct Gates’ innovative Uranus – at best they bring about a revolution together.  Fauci’s experimental and fearless Mars opposition Uranus square onto Gates’ super-confident (and wealthy) Jupiter Pluto in Leo – together they can move mountains.

  Their relationship chart has a composite Saturn opposition Pluto square Mercury. At best that is deep-thinking (Mercury Pluto) and capable of having a profound effect on the masses (Saturn Pluto).  Though without an earth-shattering public health disaster to soak up the energy they wouldn’t get on at all.

Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors is not a title calculated to soothe the notoriously thin-skinned Sussexes. Tom Bower, dubbed the “Witchfinder General of contemporary biographers”, has his latest offering out next week, part serialised this weekend.  He is known for not pulling his punches and is adept at digging out secrets.

  His doggedly determined temperament sits uncomfortably with Meghan’s Leonine desire for applause and admiration. Bower, born 28 September 1946, has his Saturn in Leo conjunct her 1^st house Mercury and his Pluto is conjunct her Sun; with her wannabe-a-leader Leo North Node also getting squelched by his Saturn. Dark storm clouds raining on her parade.

 He is a Sun, Neptune in Libra  which should fit well with her Libra Moon and Jupiter though her Saturn will get in the way.  But his unyielding Saturn Pluto in Leo and his Mars Jupiter in Scorpio squaring her Node and Saturn will be what gets her at her most vulnerable spot – her vanity and desperation to be well thought of.  His Uranus also opposes her Neptune which will create high anxiety.

  Prince Harry equally – indeed possibly even more so – will react badly. Bower’s Mars is conjunct Harry’s Pluto for a rage-inducing connection with Bower’s Uranus in a disruptive square to Harry’s Sun and opposition his Mars – a tinderbox crossover. Bower’s Pluto also falls in Harry’s 8^th making him feel trapped.

  Meghan’s relationship with Bower looks aggravating and combustible at best with a composite Saturn, Mars, Sun, Uranus, Mercury (and Pluto) conjunction – all of which tr Saturn will oppose in 2023 so grievances will rankle on. Harry has much the same in his relationship chart with Bower.

  In the past Bower has written biographies about Robert Maxwell, Mohamed Al-Fayed, Conrad Black, Richard Branson, Bernie Ecclestone, Simon Cowell, Tony Blair, Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson. Most were deemed explosive though there were questions about accuracy in one. His 2020 Boris Johnson: The Gambler was noted for being sympathetic in contrast with some of Bower’s others. Bower’s Scorpio Moon and Venus will be in aspect to BJ’s Neptune in Scorpio opposition Jupiter with BJ’s Scorpio Moon being conjunct Bower’s Jupiter Mars – hinting at a Jupiterian smoothing over of rough edges.

  Bower ahead looks successful in 2023/24 and pushing confidently ahead with tr Pluto square his Jupiter with an even more upbeat Solar Arc Pluto conjunct his Jupiter by 2024 – his next victim may well be quailing.

  Meghan’s Solar Arc Uranus is in a high-tension and eruptive square to her Saturn exactly now and she has a trapped, infuriated tr Pluto opposition her Sun/Mars conjunction from August to December so she won’t be at her sunniest.

Harry in general is not in a great phase of his life – see previous posts January 21 and April 15 2022. He’s got tr Neptune opposition his Sun this year and square his Mars/Jupiter midpoint exactly now – both of which are enthusiasm-denting.

  I’m sure both mean well but it is a tragedy played out on a public platform of theatrical, almost farcical, proportions, rife with misjudgements and hubris.

True crime doesn’t get scarier, gruesomer or more popular than Netflix’s chart-topping Girl in the Picture. The public appetite for abuse and serial-killer porn is thriving.

   The story – gleaned from the internet – tells of a young woman in her early 20s, found dying after a supposed hit and run, who turns out to have been kidnapped when six years old by a violent and sadistic stepfather who abused and subsequently married her. It is assumed he probably murdered her, the boyfriend she had run away with and her son by him, and a girl friend of hers as well as others. He is now on death row.

  She had multiple names during an unsettled childhood but still managed to be accepted into the Georgia Institute of Technology on a scholarship to study aerospace engineering. Ultimately it was discovered she was Suzanne Sevakis and her stepfather/husband is Franklin Delano Floyd.

Suzanne, 9 September 1969 Texas, was a Sun conjunct Pluto in Virgo opposition her North Node and square Mars in Sagittarius – power, fear, control were the central features of her experience. Her Node tied into that brutal T Square does suggest a fated life. But she also had an adventurous Uranus Jupiter Mercury conjunct in Libra and Venus Moon in Leo so had a lighter side as well. She would be hard-working with a Virgo Sun trine Saturn in Taurus.

 Franklin Floyd, 17 June 1943, Georgia, was a Sun Gemini like several other serial killers – Jeffrey Dahmer, David Berkowitz, Peter Sutcliffe, Wayne Williams, Robert Lee Yates Jr. He had a damaging and horrifying childhood with his alcoholic father dying aged 32; and he ended up in foster care where he was bullied and abused (see wiki).

  His duplicitous Gemini Sun (possibly opposition Sagittarius Moon) square Neptune locked into Suzanne’s Sun Pluto Mars T square and his Saturn in Gemini squared her Sun – so he’d deceive and manipulate her and deflate her self-esteem. His superficially charming and persuasive Venus Pluto in Leo squared her Saturn – and his North Node in Leo may have been conjunct her Moon.

  Their relationship chart has a needs-space, different-agenda composite Sun, Mercury, Uranus so not well designed for a closeted, possessive relationship.  A Saturn square Mars suggests cruelty or unkindness and a necessity for one to suppress their needs; plus a power-struggling composite Jupiter Pluto conjunction.

  He had a strongly aspected and brutal 18^th harmonic, often found with serial killers. Her victim 12^th harmonic was marked.

  Can’t imagine why anyone would want to watch it. One of the many oddities of our culture.  We have moved from an Agatha Christie – find a corpse, spot the killer – fascination which kept the masses enraptured for generations – onto the real deal which is much less sanitised.  

Italy and Germany are flagging up as the most immediately troubled of the EU countries, which given that they are the third and first largest economies, is a considerable worry. Though most of the other EU members, like elsewhere globally, are also labouring over the coming years.

 On Thursday, the capable Mario Draghi resigned as Italy’s prime minister although the president insisted he stay in place.  The Italy 17 March 1861 chart is on cue for the tumultuous 1st August conjunction of Uranus, Mars and North Node rattling up its Mars in Taurus square Jupiter at the exact 18 degree mark.  The Bank of Italy, 10 August 1893 also has its Leo Sun exactly in the line of fire.

  Tr Saturn is also trekking across that sensitive point this October to mid November, ramming the message home, that life is achanging and not for the better immediately.  

  There are concerns about a coming EU recession with record energy prices and inflation, and a currency that has slumped to parity with the US dollar for the first time in 20 years (though remaining steady so far with the UK pound).

  Not only is Germany facing domestic hardship with cuts in gas supplies because of Russia sanctions and retaliation. But its position as the EU’s exporting powerhouse will be at risk as Russia pulls the plug on cheap energy supplies; and its reliance on globalization is exposed. A total stoppage to Nord Stream 1 supplies would hit eurozone growth by 3.5 per cent until the first quarter of next year and could mark the bloc’s worst downturn since the 2008 financial crisis.

  The Germany 1 January 1871 chart has an 8^th house (financial) Pluto in Taurus being hammered this year and into next by tr Uranus conjunct Pluto bringing major disruption. And the challenges and pain will continue with a trapped tr Pluto trine the Germany Mars in 2023/2024; worsening – as it is in many of the EU charts – through the entry of Neptune into Aries alongside Saturn in 2025 when they oppose the Germany Mars and square the Saturn which will bring major headaches and a sense of failure.

 The Bundesbank (central bank) 26 July 1957, is discouraged this year and worse into 2023 – devastated/confused in 2023/24 with tr Saturn opposition Mars, Mercury, Pluto, Venus and tr Pluto square the Neptune. By 2025 tr Pluto will oppose the BBank Sun for a challenging, potentially stuck time forcing a move away from the past.

The EU chart itself, 31 December 1957, is being undermined by a Solar Arc Neptune conjunct the Sun over this winter, so disappointed and unrealistic about finding practical solutions to the malaise. Again the truly difficult years will be 2025/26 with an economically blocked and potentially damaging Solar Arc Pluto opposition the 8^th house financial Moon and square Uranus; and a discouraging Solar Arc Sun square Saturn in 2026.

  The EURO 1 January 1999 chart is flagging at the moment with tr Neptune square the Moon into 2023 and will have an uphill struggle with tr Pluto square the Saturn in the final months of this year from August onwards. 2024/25 will be desolate with tr Pluto conjunct the Neptune. Late this decade will be monumentally difficult for the EU itself, the currency, Germany – and the UK as tr Neptune squares the respective Suns with other Solar Arcs piling on the challenges.

  The other EU countries point to considerable problems building from now and culminating around the 2025 mark.

  I’m not sure why Neptune moving into Aries in 2025 was thought to be a bringer of sunshine since it isn’t showing up as such.

Getting a divorce at 91 may appear bizarre but is a strangely fitting epitaph for novelist Fay Weldon’s haunted history in the marital stakes. Her best known novel turned into a successful film The Life and Loves of a She-Devil is a tale of relentless and sadistic vengeance against a cheating husband and his mistress. Though she insisted it was really a tale of envy.

 Born 22 September 1931 5.50pm Alvechurch, England, with a philandering father who was abandoned and a wayward mother, from a bohemian free-loving, intellectual family, she had a rackety childhood. Her grandfather was a writer fascinated by astrology, poltergeists and ghosts which permeate her writings as well.

   She was an unexpectedly single mother at 22 by a nightclub doorman and went on to marry a schoolmaster 25 years older. He wanted the respectability of a marriage for job applications and didn’t want sex, but extraordinarily pimped her out to his friends and got her a job in a Soho clip joint. He was despatched and she married a jazz musician, who left her 30 years later for an astrologer who told him the marriage was compatible.  Much vituperative media coverage followed. She then married a poet and former bookseller 15 years her junior, who became her manager after their marriage in 1994. He is now accused of ‘coercive control and financial mismanagement’ despite having moved her into his mother’s house and signing half over to her.

 She is evidently now in a nursing home and can’t talk after a stroke, a back operation and grieving for one of her sons who died recently.    

  The gothic and spooky ambience of her life was there from the start with a New Zealand earthquake separating her father from the family and she never saw him again, through a surprise pregnancy, into sadistic husband Number One, thence onto the jazz musician. Having baled for his astrological soul-mate, he then died almost eight hours before their  divorce was finalised, allowing her to remarry. That did feel uncanny at the time.

  She is a Virgo as befits the author of 30 books, with her Sun on the cusp of her intense 8^th with Venus in Libra and Mars in vengeful Scorpio also in her 8^th. The 8^th house has a reputation for producing oddly eerie events and coincidences.

Her generational Saturn in Capricorn opposition Pluto square Uranus in Aries gives her grit, perseverance, initiative and a strongly innovative and disruptive/de-stabilising streak. Her Jupiter in flamboyant Leo opposes her Aquarius Moon and is in a lucky/adventurous trine to her Uranus.

  Two things are intriguing astrologically.  One is strong planet aspects in her chart to her Neptune/Pluto midpoint which points to supernatural, mystical and occult interests – as well as confusion, obsession and inner torment.

   More significantly for her matrimonial prospects, her Neptune falls in her relationship 7^th house and is exactly square her Sun/Moon midpoint, the marriage significator. Nuptial bliss for her is an area wreathed in confusion, deception and lack of commitment. Her second and third marriages were to creative types which would soak up some of it. But Neptune with its hallucinatory qualities, and its tendency to idealise and then condemn, raises impossible expectations and induces deep resentment when reality takes a bite out of the dream.

  There are no birth dates for any of the husbands or the weddings which is a shame.

  A strange and not exactly loveable woman.   

Ivana Trump, first wife of Donald and mother of Don Jnr, Ivanka and Eric, has died after apparently falling down stairs. She was a competitive skier and model, born in Czechoslovakia,  who became a business woman after her marriage with real estate investments, her own clothing, beauty, and jewellery lines, wrote books and had a tabloid advice column.

  Her first husband was an Austrian ski instructor who she reportedly married in order to obtain Austrian citizenship, allowing her to leave her communist home country without defecting. The Trump marriage, forged three weeks after meeting, collapsed into acrimony after 13 years over his infidelity with Marla Maples. The split was gossip-magazine fodder for months and her settlement included $14 million, a 45-room Connecticut mansion, an apartment in the Trump Plaza, and the use of Mar-a-Lago for one month a year. Ivana subsequently raised the three children.

  Post-divorce, she married an Italian businessman for two years, had a longer relationship with an Italian count and then briefly married an Italian actor, though she kept in touch amicably with him.  Not a dull life.

  She was born 20 February 1949 12.55am Gottwaldov, Czech Republic, she was a Sun Mars in Pisces (good combo for a skier) opposition Saturn square a Sagittarius Moon – used to hardship, needed an audience, emotionally scattered. Her Sun was trine an 8^th house Uranus making her overly-excitable, highly-strung. Her Venus in sociable Aquarius was in a persuasive/seductive opposition to Pluto  and her Jupiter in money-magnet Capricorn was in a square to dreamy Neptune.

  Her marriage to Trump didn’t have much going for it from the synastry – with his Sun conjunct her Uranus and his Moon opposition her Uranus – not well-designed for a 24/7 match. Though his Moon in her 2^nd would give financial comfort.  But their relationship chart does have slightly better connections with a lucky, adventurous (and opportunistic?) Sun Jupiter opposition Mars and a passionate Venus square Pluto.

  It was generally thought she was closest to Ivanka, though I wonder. Ivanka’s  Mars in Virgo square Sagittarius Moon sits uncomfortably with her mother’s Saturn opposition Mars Sun; and Ivanka’s Saturn was conjunct her mother’s Neptune and square her Jupiter – a fair number of irritants between them and Ivanka would damp her mother’s fights of fancy and confidence.

 Don Jnr was an even worse match with his volatile and uncompromising Mars in Leo square Uranus crashing into his mother’s Pluto and Venus. If anything I would have said she got on best with Eric with his Sun conjunct her Jupiter and his Moon conjunct her Sun. And his Aquarius Moon is showing signs of separation and loss at the moment.

  One of the wonders – from an astro-bystander point of view – is Ivanka’s relationship, frankly with both parents. Despite her daddy’s-favourite status during the White House days, her crossover with him is truly difficult.  Their relationship chart has a composite Sun, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Uranus conjunction with Uranus conjunct Pluto – and that is a tinderbox of resentment. Her relationship chart with her mother was marginally easier but not entirely stable with a Mars opposition Jupiter square Uranus and Venus trine Pluto Saturn. Unfortunately she’s the one of the three kids there is no birth time for which would help.
