World Cup football – keeping up appearances

Football fans will be bunkering down with enthusiasm as the FIFA World Cup kicks off in Mexico, then Toronto, followed by LA this week and continues on till July 19th.  The first match in Mexico City kicks off 90 minutes after the opening ceremony, which is 11.30 am CST.

There is the much touted Venus Jupiter conjunction in Cancer in place until June 25th which is schmaltzy, sugary-sweet, good for fashion and keeping up appearances but inclines to be superficial, wasteful and expensive  – all show and no substance. The Venus opposes Pluto and squares a Taurus Moon adding to a slightly over-the-top, indulgent and acquisitive feel. None of which sounds too much like top class sport but time will tell. Though Mars in Taurus will help to put some boot into the proceedings.

Depending on whether the opening ceremony in Mexico is taken as the start chart = maybe disruptive with Uranus on the Midheaven and physically challenging with Pluto in the 6th.  Or the opening match has a simmering cauldron of anger with Mars in the 8th.

The Los Angeles opening match 12 June 2026 4.30pm LA, has the bullishly assertive and excitable Mars Moon in the 7th; with an intense 8th house Sun.

Time will tell which works best.

Gianni Infantino, the FIFA President, who grovelled in front of Trump and awarded him the first FIFA Peace Prize last December in a cringeworthy ceremony, was born 23 March 1970 Switzerland. He is a Sun Mercury in Ares opposition Pluto and Uranus and sextile Neptune is go-ahead, ambitious, overly impulsively. With his money-attracting Jupiter in Scorpio opposition a tough Mars Saturn in Taurus, he does have grit though possibly flawed judgement with Jupiter Mars and Jupiter Saturn.  He looks nerve-stretched now till mid August which is hardly surprising with such a large enterprise to oversee and could be a touch over-confident with tr Pluto square his Jupiter late June to early August. Since that tugs on the opposition to Mars Saturn it may not end well especially in the aftermath.

  1. Just a comment – I’ve noticed that England’s Captain, Harry Kane (28 July 1993), really does look like a Leo Sun individual, particularly when he yells in triumph. So I was curious to see that his Sun is the only planet in Leo, at 5 degrees sextile a Libran Jupiter, and trine NN in Sagittarius. No birth time, unfortunately, but he does have Moon in sporty Sagittarius too.

  2. A totally non-sporting comment – the UK will have its Jupiter in Leo return this July – which – might – be a hint of success.

    • A totally non sporting, non astrology comment. I shall ask my soccer fan family member to grab a UK jersey before they run out of stock or get scapel

    • Thanks Marjorie! Generally speaking, the UK could do with a generous dollop of Jupiter in Leo at this point.
Looking at the UK in 1966, when the UK actually won the now legendary match with West Germany, I noticed tr Neptune in Scorpio was one degree passed its return to 18 Scorpio Neptune for the UK. It trined UK’s Cancer Moon, where tr Jupiter in Cancer was one degree off the conjunction – what a sign of a euphoric population! The tr North Node at 22 Taurus was conjunct 1066 Neptune. Tr Pluto in Virgo (conjunct Uranus) was conjunct the 1066 Saturn.

Curious to see an energetic aspect pattern in 1966 too – that Uranus/Pluto in Virgo was sextile Neptune and Jupiter. Looking at the details for that World Cup shows how much has changed – there were only 16 teams (African teams had boycotted it for some reason).

      • My husband watched the Scotland v Haiti match last night/in the early hours – Scotland won – and was overwhelmed by the Scottish supporters rendition of ‘Flower of Scotland’ where the entire stadium seemed to erupt, along with a rousing ‘Loch Lomond’, the crowd in fine voice, which seems fitting under a Gemini Moon in Scotland’s 5th house in sextile to Neptune.

        • Hats off to your husband VF! I didn’t watch it, but hoped Scotland would prevail. And they did, just. They have some of the most passionate supporters and fans.

  3. Thanks Marjorie, be interesting to see how this unfolds. I’m never sure how far in advance a Solar Eclipse might begin to show influence, but the 20 Leo one on 12 August is conjunct FIFA’s ‘natal’ Moon, opposing Saturn, trine Jupiter in Aries, and sextile Pluto in Gemini. So it seems significant, and you mention ‘the aftermath’ of the tournament, so this plays a part in that. Lively, to say the least. The Moon squares FIFA’s Mercury 18 Taurus, and Venus 17 Taurus – right on the Mexico City Mars. As you say, ‘bullish and excitable’……

FIFA, 21 May, 1904, is also having a Neptune square Neptune transit. Tr Neptune is right on the descendant, squaring the Cancer MC, where their natal Neptune resides, unsurprisingly. Partnerships and direction are highlighted, along with open enemies. They’ve also got tr Chiron in Aries square their natal Chiron, which could be significant. Never know for sure quite how Chiron might manifest, but Jupiter in Cancer may encourage something noticeable this month.

FIFA’s 0 Gemini Sun is conjunct Mars, 2 Gemini so feeling the electricity and unruliness of Uranus in Gemini, and poised for a Mars Return.

    • Your mention of FIFA’s inception reminds me there was lots of codification applied to the rules of sports – firstly during the Pluto in Taurus period of 1850-1880 and then organisation/competitions during the Pluto in Gemini period (e.g. Football League 1888. IOC 1894, Rugby League 1895, baseball World Series 1903, Tour De France 1908). Essentially Pluto in Taurus organising what happens within a game; Pluto in Gemini looking to organise how things begin to be structured a bigger level. The move from Taurean self-centredness to Gemini’s interest in what’s going on around it and travelling further. Anyway all of those organisations will be coming in for a hit from transiting Uranus in the upcoming years. Uranus’ first/previous transited was during WWII and most of them were cancelled for obvious reasons.

      • An excellent point, worth watching. It occurs to me that Pluto in Gemini also ran alongside the proliferation of mass media, where reporting on sports fixtures must have encouraged interest in a wide audience. Also, perhaps, gambling?

        • Good point about media. Sport is pretty much the one big draw for television these days. There is very little other “event television” that everybody will be talking about the next day. I guess there were many people who just bought a daily newspaper for the sports pages.

Also reminds that all the TV contracts for sports are now being further diluted by the presence Amazon, Youtube and other bidders edging in on the terrestrial channels and satellite channels that dominated. Of course this has been evolving over the past decade but it may be the Pluto in Aquarius democratisation of media allowing anybody to get to their niche interests served up to them rather than be dictated to by what the TV company serves up.

I thought gambling is ruled by Leo/5th house especially as it squares the money signs of Taurus/Scorpio. For some gamblers especially with things like roulette there’s some kind of god complex which is very Leo – a belief that they can do better than the odds.

          • Yes, agree re Leo and 5th House and gambling. But I’d also include a dash of Mercury, the merchant and trickster, and that whole Gemini love of games. Maybe that’s the bookmakers themselves? Possibly obsessive Pluto in Gemini might then suggest a strong desire to gamble – plus dreams of wealth from tricks and games?

          • Definitely could be something Gemini trickster about bookmakers – after all, odds are set with a superficial knowledge of what will happen and then adjusted based on how people are betting to encourage more betting on the other contenders and thereby avoid the bookies losses. I suppose that might also describe Scorpio.

          • GD, I think setting odds is a little more mathematical than superficial, vas it’s based on probability, historical background/trend and a few other variables.
That’s why sometimes going against the predicted winner ie favourite can earn someone who bet on an outsider big bucks.

          • JenniferE – I was thinking specifically of bookmakers at racecourses. I’m doubtful a bookie setting odds on today’s 3:30 at Utoxeter is doing a major scientific analysis of the horses in that race when he also has another six races involving upwards of 50 horses to consider. Obviously day-to-day experience, knowing the horses/conditions etc will guide their initial setting. If they get odds wrong then they quickly change them to encourage people to bet differently – that flexibility also seems very Gemini mutable to me.

But yes, the gambling firms will be doing a significant extra amount of work to set the odds for the Grand National or Super Bowl where there is much more money at stake. I’m sure computers will be doing a lot of the background work these days.

          • As far as bookies at horse racing is concerned, I’d suggest there’s definitely some Mercury and Gemini involved – historically. Their secret sign language, Tic Tac, was used for years to signal changes in prices. It used a combination of hand signals and rhyming slang but is dying out now thanks to smartphones.

    • Last night’s friendly warm-up match between England and Costa Rica was delayed by storms. Can’t help thinking how literal astrology can be sometimes – Uranus and lightning bolts, all that symbolic electricity sizzling in the FIFA founding chart! Plus the energies of Mars in Gemini later this month and on into July. And with Mercury, Gemini’s ruler, retrograding from 29th June, storm delays may prove to be a notable feature of the tournament.

“Host cities in the south east of the United States and the Gulf Coast regions are most likely to face interruptions. It is the height of thunderstorm season.

Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Miami and New Jersey in particular regularly experience electrical storms. Mexico City and Monterrey in Mexico will also be susceptible.

But the stadiums in Atlanta, Dallas and Houston have fixed or retractable roofs which can reduce the impact.” BBC News

I also wanted to note fixed star Mirfak, alpha star at 2 Gemini in the constellation Perseus. Both Uranus and Mars align with this star during the World Cup.

“The constellation is indicative of events effecting large numbers of people, especially those events caused by major meteorological phenomena. When prominent in a natal chart it is said to denote adventurous individuals, but also those who are less than honest in their dealings with others.” [Fixed Stars and Judicial Astrology, George Noonan, 1990, p.14.]

  4. Good God, Gianni Infantino’s chart is definitely an astrologer’s delight, but not for him.

“his money-attracting Jupiter in Scorpio opposition a tough Mars Saturn in Taurus”. Scorpio is associated with other people’s money, Taurus with one’s own. So I would say that Jupiter in Scorpio would suggest that he is good at getting other people’s money or getting them to use it, while Mars-Saturn in Taurus could suggest a childhood or early life with a shortage of/struggle with money, which may explain why he really focusses on big money projects (Jupiter in Scorpio).

His Sun and Mercury are opposition natal Moon and Uranus, and all four of them will be getting hammered by the changes of planets into Fire-Air signs at about the same time. Quite a drubbing for the Sun and the Moon at the same time, with Saturn-Neptune conjunct the Sun and Mercury (so possibly his appearances will be diluted/restricted as will his speeches?) with Pluto sextile the Sun-Mercury and trine the Moon-Uranus.

If I were to rectify the chart (and I look forward to Martha’s work on this), I would be inclined to put the Aries-Taurus stellium in the ninth House. Quite apart from being head of an international organisation, he was born to Italian migrant parents in Switzerland and is married to a Lebanese, with houses across the world. Mind you the same interpretation can be drawn of Elon Musk and Trump.

  5. To me this feels like the hangover of what Pluto in Capricorn did. Expansion of the World Cup to include 48 teams basically so they can get a bigger tournament with more games to sell to TV and perhaps get more revenue from smaller countries. And this has been the playbook for most sports in the past couple of decades – water down the quality to make more money – which then alienates the real fans at the expense of casual fans. Of course there is an argument that the ‘inclusion’ will be good for growing the sport but it feels to me like the balance has swung too far.

I’m seeing many commenters saying they feel the least enthused ever about this World Cup – the combination of America’s politics and FIFA’s greed. Leo is the sign of sport so perhaps with Pluto now opposing it; the detachment of Aquarius begins to say “Nah you’ve killed my passion for this game”.

    • It’s notable that Jupiter moves into Leo on June 29th/30th which is when the Knockout rounds begin. I suspect that is when many fans actually begin to get interested.

    • Exactly, GD. I know I’ll watch some of it, of course. But I’m struggling with how unfair, and greedy this is in so many ways.

    • Agree. Stopped watching since last world cup, took from social media and news notifications only. Dilution ended the passion. Euro compensated but World Cup-nay.

Leo solar eclipse should show its colour on last match. Nearly a month earlier.

Exciting but then dilution ends. Another of Uranus job..overturn eveything- turn passion to boredom
