Actress Sydney Sweeney’s unglamorous choice of a role playing Christy Martin, the first great female American boxer, a working-class lesbian and survivor of domestic violence, appears not to have gone down well in the US. Whether that is due to the subject matter or Sweeney’s divisive reputation as a Maga supporter isn’t clear, though the critics praised her ‘powerful characterisation.’
Sydney Sweeney, born September 12, 1997 at 12.42pm Spokane, Washington, has a creditable cv of good movies from The Handmaid’s Tale, Sharp Objects, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Euphoria, The White Lotus and Immaculate. She appeared to fall foul of media hysteria in a confected scandal about a jeans advert and her dating of Scooter Braun (don’t ask something about Taylor Swift).
Her mother is a former criminal defense lawyer and her father works in the hospitality industry. At school she was active in numerous sports, soccer, baseball team, snow slalom skiing, wakeboarding, taekwondo, jujitsu, grappling, and kickboxing. She said she began practicing combat sports at age 5 to help manage her hyperactivity.
She is a Sun Virgo conjunct the North Node on her Midheaven sextile a 12th house Mars in determined Scorpio inconjunct a 5th house Saturn in forced-to-be-self-reliant Aries which hints at a good deal of buried anger and a tough start in life some of which will have been channelled into sport given that the 5th house rules sporting activities. A Saturnine yod can be self-defeating and needs maturity and self-discipline to get the better end of it. Her Sun is also trine a hard working and creative Moon Neptune in Capricorn sextile her Mars in Scorpio. Pluto on her Ascendant will make her difficult to understand; it is sextile her Uranus and in a dogmatic square to her Mercury.
It is a heavy and tricky chart which may explain why she attracts a degree of hostility. Her career will carry on regardless for many years to come with increasing success towards the end of this decade. Though 2027/28 will be challenging as her Solar Arc Saturn will oppose her Mars for a setback.
Christy Martin, 12 June 1968 Mullens, West Virginia, scaled the heights as a boxer but married her much-older trainer who dominated and then nearly killed her. Like Sweeney she has a yod focal point Saturn in Aries. In her case it is inconjunct Pluto Uranus in Virgo sextile Neptune; and her Saturn is also in another yod sextile her Sun Mars and Venus in Gemini inconjunct Neptune – so she was clearly marked out for a singular path in life. Her guardian angel comes in the form of her Jupiter in Leo which is trine her Saturn, sextile her Mars and square her Neptune. Like Sweeney she has a Capricorn Moon – so they would connect.

Interesting about attracting hostility – in part as a result of desire. (Pluto?)
I listen to a major US sports talk radio station to follow my teams – it which tends to be politically and socially conservative, and thus provides a view of how the ‘other half’ thinks. (She called up that station for an interview to promote her film, but I didn’t bother listening at the time). I also just read about an interview she finally gave about the controversy her ads have generated, in which she says she tried to avoid making comments but realized she had to finally say something, which is that she does not support any ‘hate or divisiness’.
Unfortunately for her, it seems that she was placed/or put herself in a no-win situation, both with her ad and her movie. Or maybe because people project their desires on her.
The right-wing loved her because of that ad and her looks, which appeal to their blond/blue eyed visions. (Some radio hosts were talking about how they would love to date her if only they weren’t married). The left despise her for the same reason.
Now that I learn that the real-life character she played was lesbian, and a survivor of domestic violence, – both of which the right hates or sweeps under the rug – and doesn’t look anything like the seductive person in her ad, I can see why her film would have a very limited audience and poor reception, regardless of her acting.
In the current sociopolitical climate, she may have to be more cautious in selecting projects in the future, unless she can afford to ignore what the public says and do her own thing.
Popularity in an actor tends to get them typecast. And for many actors that is boring. Some balance it by doing the sort of roles that put bums on seats in the cinema or on the telly, but do more satisfying roles in the theatre or in Indy films. However this actress maybe wanted to do martial art’s films. A potential Cynthis Rothrock perhaps. In any case it didn’t do Hilary Swank any harm.
Interesting – I have Pluto/Mars/Lilith in tight conjunction conjunct the ascendant and have noticed people have strong initial reactions to me both positive and negative without any real cause either way. They are in 12th house so only became aware of this later in life.
I’ve learnt to love my Pluto/Mars/Lilith – intense but gives me reserves of steel.
Also, people often associate you with sexiness (like Sweeney) when you’re more interested in having a cup of tea
As to the chart resonance between subject and lead: SS spoke of her connection w Christy on a late night interview ( Colbert if memory serves, a month or two ago.)
There was the recently released Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson movie about the MMA fighter. Johnson put on a great performance, but people just weren’t interested in seeing the movie. Maybe people don’t want to see gritty, depressing movies at the moment because of what’s going on in the world?
Reminds me of the Charlize Theron film that got nominated but little seen. Monster, I think. Understandably beautiful bombshells crave a gritty role-but the public, not-so-much.
I doubt the Rock’s fan want to see him in serious role portraying another person.
I assume they prefer him in the basic shoot’em action film.
Plus there is so much choice in media these days. Perhaps true fans would have in years past, but why bother when streaming offers a smorgasbord of options.
Still, that Rock film looks worthwhile and I hope to catch it.
Thanks Marjorie. I like Sydney Sweeny.
I have no idea why she seems to attract such strong feeling from others. Particularly in relation to her her appearance and how others percieve her. Pluto on her Ascendent perhaps? Attracts jealousy from others.
Thanks ..it does espouse jealousy 🙂 in houses which r publicly visible. My aunt has in 3rd house of siblings so she is jealousy target of all and she of me as I have it in ascendant so funny but one realises only when one is jealous 🙂 and knows others birth chart.
Interesting Rachana.
More then likely it’s because people tend to try and make any celebrity some type of activist, but only for their side, if you’re not on their side or don’t share their political views you’re considered supporting the other side. No room for nuanced.
I don’t really care for Sydney really. I’ve never seen any of the shows Marjorie listed. But it’s pretty messed up they demonize her because of her politics (if she is MAGA, and I’m sure a lot of celebs are that a lot of people don’t realize). There was a recent interview in which a reporter was obviously trying to fish her to apologize for the American Eagle ad, like if she’s responsible for that instead of the company. Then again, the hoopla over that was moronic to begin with, because obviously it was tongue in cheek “you have great jeans” and they try to twist it into some eugenics thing…That’s more the problem of the people who perceive it that way instead of Sydney’s responsibility.
I ain’t no MAGA supporter, far from it, but she’s not a political activist and I don’t know why people tend to try and make celebrities into activist even if they don’t want to. They don’t have the power to change laws. Her job is only to distract you from the problems of the world with entertainment, as in, movies and shows, which is her job. Other then that, if she is MAGA I really don’t care, that’s her personal thing, she’s not a politician or a activist, she’s just some actress.
Hmmm. I actually think it matters a lot when celebrities endorse wannabe authoritarian regimes, which is why the current U.S. regime puts out fake AI of celebrities endorsing Trump.
It’s understandable that people get upset about this when they see how Trump is undermining and doing away with due process, a basic foundational freedom in any country and certainly the U.S.
Her Pluto could also lead to personal transformation. I hope she sees one day that dehumanizing wide swaths of people to the extent of justifying shooting people on boats and arresting and deporting people without due process, including some Americans, is not ethical or moral. Threatening to shoot a pregnant American woman because her car was “following” an unmarked ICe car when she lived in the neighborhood is also not okay. Court after court reprimands this administration for lying about why they’ve harmed people in these confrontations as evidence proves ICE/DHS flat out lied. This is something everyone should condemn, no matter their politics.
We can all have different belief systems, and she shouldn’t be judged for that in general, but specifically at this point in time when she is endorsing what she’s endorsing, it’s reductionist to ascribe the majority of the divisiveness to jealousy. At any rate she has a successful career and has successfully parlayed criticism into more of her MAGA branding, so she’s actually gained from the criticism, which is very Pluto!
@C.L., Well said.
I’m more speaking about myself then anything. I don’t put stock on what a celebrity’s political views are. At the end of the day, they live in a vastly different world than regular people. Whether democratic or republican, a celebrity has never decided on whom and what I vote for, because they don’t live the life I live. They’re not educated enough on politics anyway, and they go with where the wind blows for their career.
I wish people would stop putting such importance on such people. She’s just some actress, I’m not going to lose sleep if she thinks this or that. I don’t care for her or her politics. I just wish people would put more stock into the people with actual power and not some run of the mill celebrity who’ll be replaced next year with the next “it” person.
If she wants to support that cesspool of a movement well that’s her right, by all means. But I have no interest in her or her career endeavors. I just choose to like shrug and be like whatever, there will always be people like those. It’s not my job or my intention to change this woman’s mind anyway, and even if she did and became some ultra liberal the next day, I still wouldn’t care cause she doesn’t have the power to do much anyway. It’s not anyone’s job really to do that, that’s her personal responsibility. All you can do is just not pay to watch her movies.
That was the GQ interview where a woke reporter tried her hardest to stitch Sweeny up. But Sydney triumphed, leaving the unpleasant reporter looking ridiculous.
