Poland – a nationalist lurch to the right

A shock result in the Polish presidential election has seen a right-wing historian, a former boxer with a background in football hooliganism and no political experience voted in. Karol Nawrocki is likely to oppose the prime minister Donald Tusk’s centrist pro-EU and pro-Ukraine agenda. The outcome is a rare win for Donald Trump’s Maga movement abroad, following election defeats for rightwing politicians aligned with the US president in Canada, Australia and Romania.

Radical candidates on both ends of the political spectrum fared better than expected in the first round, endorsed in particular by younger voters. “The fight pitting liberal internationalists against pro-Trump, pro-Orbán populists is being joined, and Poland is one of the more important battlegrounds in what is likely a generational struggle within the world’s leading democracies.”

What brought Nawrocki to a slender win was the backing of Jarosław Kaczynski’s Law and Justice (PiS) party, a ruthless and effective populist electoral machines. “His approach  – one can call it nationalistic: emphasising the exceptional heroism and martyrdom of Poles in the 20th century.”

Karol Nawrocki, 3 March 1983, Gdansk, is a Sun Pisces square a lucky, risk-taking, adventurous Jupiter Uranus in Sagittarius which might have suggested a more liberal mindset. But his Mars in Aries, conjunct Venus, inconjunct Saturn in Scorpio conjunct Pluto points to a darker, more ruthless side to his personality. Especially since his Neptune opposition the North Node squares onto his Mars in Aries. Neptune on his South Node in Capricorn and a focal point Mars in warrior-like and aggressive Aries won’t be awash with sympathy and sentiment.

He is not in for an easy ride ahead with 2026 having tr Neptune Saturn conjunct his Mars for setbacks and failure and tr Pluto square his Saturn into 2027 as well for a grinding uphill struggle.

His relationship with Donald Tusk is one of polar opposites with a composite Uranus opposition Sun Mercury which is being undermined by tr Saturn Neptune in 2026 and later; and a highly-strung tr Uranus opposition the composite Neptune from this July.

Donald Tusk’s Term chart as PM, 13 December 2023 10am is being jolted onto a new track by tr Uranus opposition the Midheaven from this June onwards into 2026; and a high-tension tr Uranus square the Saturn from this August into 2026.

Nawrocki’s relationship with his mentor Jaroslaw Kaczynski, 18 June 1949, won’t be plain sailing, to put it mildly, with tr Neptune Saturn causing uncertainty and undermining joint confidence as well as running into major roadblocks from this July on for three years.

Nawrocki’s relationship with both Poland charts, 1918 and 1989, will be significantly unsettled right through till 2027 as well.

The Poland 24 August 1989 1.05pm chart will be facing the uncertainty of tr Neptune Saturn square the Uranus, Saturn, Neptune in Capricorn and Jupiter in Cancer from now and on effectively till late decade, though 2026/27 are likely to be the most worrisome. The 1918 chart looks panicked and undermined now and into 2026 with tr Neptune Saturn square the Mars in final degree Sagittarius.

  1. Interestingly, Nawrocki is born 3 days apart from the SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk, February 28th 1983. And with the one distinctive marker in charts being Malyuk’s Virgo Moon vs Nawrocki’s likely Scorpio Moon, I think Nawrocki is jealous of Malyuk getting to do all the “cool stuff”.

I don’t think either have what I’d call a “politician’s chart”. Strong Pisces/Aries sometimes work, but is erratic, with ups and downs that can be incredibly steep. They have Pisces Sun square Neptune/Jupiter in Sadgittarius, and this can be a maverick marker, but I also see it as being liable to future legal scrunity, especially under Gemini Uranus forming a T-Square with those planets some years from now. Must look if there’s a planet on Virgo completing a Grand Square around that time, it seems really omnious in many ways.

  2. Dont know much about poland but one thing I observed was it has become destination for immigrants who aren’t able o make for America and other European countries due to expensive visas and inability to clear immigration rules due to lack of education and skills. Ireland etc r also facing such immigrants which ultimately become nuisance and threat for natives since without skills and education and no English, only crime can feed..

Globally, right wingers r returning mostly due to excessive liberalisation now becoming threat for natives existence

    • @Rachana, Poland does not have employment issues. The disoccupation rate is below 3% . In addition, there are 1.5 million Polish people working in the EU and next around 800 k in Post-Brexit Britain. Poland needs to bring the workforce in to keep their economic growth, based largely on building and manufacturing, as well as some services, going on. Obviously, the xenophobic right wing will spin this the way they do. But the fact is there really isn’t any “liberalisation”, apart from things Polish people themselves have immensely profited from to blame here. They have been given every possible (often EU subsidized) possibility to better their lot in the past 30 years, and now it should be up to them.

      • They are smart utilising all EU advantages while skirting around key issues for the EU. Although it is mandatory for EU countries to make efforts join the common currency, Poland has made no secret of its lack of desire to join.

    • @Amy, yes, but conservative doesn’t always translate to this in Europe, and especially on Eastern or Southern Flank. You can be socially conservative yet for a strong EU. Or socially conservative in certain issues, yet very much for helping the poor and needy. Lech Wałesa, for instance, isn’t known for being socially liberal, yet he issued a rare damning statement on Nawrocki.

I think what we are seeing here is at least partially down to downright misogyny in Poland. There wasn’t a single female candidate in this race, which starts to be a true anomaly in all of Europe except Visegrád countries. A thing I’ve observed, working for multinational firms which have European service centres in these countries is my contacts are almost exclusively women. They are competent people with higher degrees speaking at least 3 languages fluently. I think that in this sense it’s like the US: Large portions of men do feel left behind and excluded, and instead of taking their frustration to the guy in the top, the blame women who are on their level.

  3. Neptune is “at home” in Pisces, which is considered by most modern astrologers to be its native sign.

Not sure if “stronger” is the best way to put it. And for certain, Neptune is much less comfortable in Aries than it is in Pisces.
