The eldest son of Norway’s crown princess has been charged with 32 offences, including four counts of rape with one of them allegedly taking place after his arrest, and could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of the most serious charges. He does not have a royal title or official duties and is stepson of Crown Prince Haakon.
I do not normally write in advance of legal proceedings but his background and that of his mother never mind their astrology is fascinating.
His mother Mette-Marit was born 19 August 1973, with a journalist father who was a convicted for violent assaults. Her parents divorced, and her father later married a professional stripper. One step-brother, Trond Berntsen died in the 2011 Norway attacks. She had a rebellious youth at one point in a relationship with a man convicted of drug-related offenses; and had a son, Marius, with another convicted felon.
Needless to say the Norwegian public were less than enchanted when Crown Prince Haakon decided to marry her. Since then she has taken several university-level courses and obtained a master’s degree in executive management.
She has a late Leo Sun conjunct Alphard (Hydra, the Water snake) which gives artistic appreciation, strong passions, lack of self-control. ‘The native seeks the limelight, power, authority, and gain fame for themselves, good or bad. Negatively, the star imparts to its natives suffering from their acts, possible loss of both position and power and authority. Subject to legal entanglement and a possible judicial sentence. The native is jealous but makes an effort to conceal it.’ Bill Clinton has his Sun conjunct Alphard.
The rest of her chart is notable with six planets in early degrees – Jupiter in Aquarius is in a confident and charming trine to Pluto Venus and a risk-taking, opportunistic square to Mars in Taurus (maybe conjunct a Taurus Moon). Her Saturn is in a tough-minded square to Venus Pluto. She also has three yods of Neptune sextile Jupiter inconjunct Saturn; and Venus Pluto sextile Neptune inconjunct Mars; and Mars sextile Saturn inconjunct Neptune – making Saturn, Mars and Neptune her apex planets, giving her a heavy karma, a tendency to be overly-impulsive/attract her to aggressive men; and to be elusive or uncommitted.
Oddly in some ways she is not dissimilar to her husband Haakon, the Crown Prince, 20 July 1973 2.12pm Oslo, Norway. His Venus in Leo is conjunct her Sun for attraction and an affectionate bond; both have Jupiter in Aquarius and her charmingly, seductive Venus Pluto conjunction connects with his Pluto and opposes his Pisces Moon. What may also be relevant is his Sun/Moon midpoint, the marriage significator, is conjunct Algol, arguably making him attracted to drama and a walk on the dark side. He is also rebellious with Uranus square his Cancer Sun so he’d be keen to suit himself and rock the boat when the mood took him.
Marius Hoiby, 13 January 1997, who appears to have been the result not even of an affair but of a passing moment (wiki), has an overly confident Capricorn Sun, Neptune, Jupiter conjunction with a Pisces Moon. But like his mother his chart is otherwise early degrees.
He has Mars North Node in Libra opposition Saturn square Venus Mercury in Capricorn – emotionally insensitive from Venus Mars and Venus Saturn as well as South Node in Aries, possibly sexually compulsive also from Venus Saturn with hints of unfair treatment in childhood which he has turned round in his adult life to act out on others.
His can-be-unkind Mars opposition Saturn forms a Half Grand Sextile with Pluto and Uranus which is volatile and would need a constructive outlet otherwise it could turn bad.
His mother’s synastry with him is hardly sympatico with her Venus Pluto conjunct his Mars and opposition his Saturn and square his Venus Mercury; and her Saturn blocking him every other which way.
His early degree planets – Saturn, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Pluto, Uranus will all be seriously rattled through the next two years. As will his mother’s.
N.B. Crown Prince Haakon’s sister Prince Martha Louise, recently embarked after a divorce on a controversial marriage to a shaman. See previous posts:

I have two yods in my chart. One has Mars at the apex, the other a Pluto-Moon conjunction. Each apex forms a part of the other yod. I have never read anything about interlocking yods. Any suggested reading?
Hi Andre: This reply is overkill for your question, but here goes. There are so many references these days as to Yod aspects! You must have read quite a few, and they are often contradictory and confusing, just like Yods themselves. (Not to say I”m not confused on this topic myself!).
Fwiw, I think of Yods as fundamentally a classic sextile (60), which indicates a harmonious, but not particularly strong relationship between the planets and houses of the sextile (using whole sign). Those sextile end points form the base of the Yod, which is where the fun starts.
The middle of the sextile is in opposition to a point 180 degrees across the chart. Oppositions are not harmonious, but the midpoint should be the compromise between the 2 sides of the sextile. So, rather than being together in a conjunction (where presumably they would agree or at least one planet would submit to the stronger one), their sextile energy is thrown across the chart from the midpoint of the sextile. That point is the focal of the Yod. If there is a planet at the focal point of the Yod, that’s where the energy of the sextile is diverted, where the 2 sides of the sextile must try to find a mutual understanding. In short, it’s the apex, or battleground to prove their “friendship”.
The path to the apex of the sextile follows separate routes, forming two 150 degree aspects to the sextile on the opposite side of the chart. 150 is an inconjunct aspect (also known as a quincunx).
Quincunxes are not easy because they go to houses and signs that are incompatible in the scheme of quadruplicities and modalities in astrology. Quadruplicities are the 4 elements, fire, earth, water and air. Modalities are cardinal, fixed and mutable. If you look at any 2 signs separated by 150 degrees you can see how this works. Each side of the fork goes to different zones. A lot of this is discussed in Chris Brennan’s work on classic astrology concepts (a very deep dive indeed).
I checked a bunch of reference books and mostly they stay away from discussing yods much as it involves a lot of stuff that is hard to simplify for general readers. Karen Hamaker-Zondag wrote a book about Yods called The Yod Book, which I have yet to read.
In short, the basic idea is the 2 paths come off the sextile in different ways. The 2 paths represent different views of the world and the focal point of the Yod becomes the battle ground between them. It goes back and forth, and the person who has the natal Yod has to sort out a way to make the different sides work together or experience a lot of frustration.
It’s like a lifelong (or progressed, or transit) assignment in diplomacy. Sometimes understanding and compromise results over the lifetime and sometimes it doesn’t (also depending on other factors in the chart), but you are compelled to try. Yods require effort to resolve. When there are multiple Yods, it’s a double or triple whammy. Yod people are forced to look between the cracks for their right path and may zig zag, or become adept at juggling contradictory situations in order to survive. It can also mean something of a double life (like spies have, maybe?). Therefore, a Yod is not boring. It is a challenge, but it can be rewarding too. That’s just my take on it.
SweetGrapes, thank you so much. I certainly feel like I lead a double life, if not triple or more, at times. Notably by being a constitutional expert locally who is published regularly and who is a secret astrologer. Tibetna mind cals this experience a Tantra mind.
And I have always enjoyed spy stories. Pluto in the 8th is one apex. It is conjunct the Moon on the cusp of the 9th, so spy stories who also happen to be quality literature (Le Carré, Conrad) or set in distant lands are attractive.
I have one question. I have a good book about yods but it does not answer it. What happens when one apex is inconjunct the other?
There have been many major transits by outer planets to my yods lately, and they certainly are a life-changing turning point.
Tibetan Buddhism calls this experience Tantra mind. Tantra mind does not type correctly.
Andre, I think your question can only be answered by more experienced people than me. Though I would guess a good place to start on an individual’s yod apexes would simply be to look at the aspects between the Apex planets one at a time and then try for an overall impression. The synthesis between elements in astrology is an art. An acquaintance who was a professional astrologer for decades said the synthesis part of astrology takes time to sink in and analyze. She had a rule of thumb that she’d sleep on a heavier chart or question for at least night or two after doing the initial analysis. It helped to sort out the important stuff from the every day stuff, and the querent or client gets no hasty answers. It takes patience and focus to look at the chart more than once, from multiple angles (which is not a money maker if a quick turnover is wanted – and she wasn’t in it for the cash).
I’m Norwegian Australian born. I never realised how NRF corruption.
What is Mette’s rising sign? What is Marius’s rising sign? What is Haakon’s rising sign? What is Martha Louise’s rising sign?
Mette is also seriously ill, I think. A difficult and progressive disease, but I am forgetting which one.
She has pulmonary fibrosis.
Marius Borg Høiby seems to have had a difficult childhood, being almost an add-on to the Norwegian royal family from a very early age but not in it. A horrendously difficult situation, and we’re now seeing the results. His father, despite his own background, seems to have stepped up to the mark reasonably well, despite having only had a one-night stand with Marius BH’s mother. Mette-Marit herself, despite a rocky start, has turned her life round pretty well. As far as I know, there is nothing to suggest that Harald and Sonja (the present king and queen) could ever have suspected how things would turn out with their children.
