Liberal Democrats – a Piscean mystery

The Liberal Democrats came second in the UK EU elections, following gains in local council elections and this week the Remainer centrist party topped a YouGov poll of Westminster voting intentions for the first time since 2010 – at 24%. The question is whether they can hold their new found momentum since they have a history as comeback kids who fade fairly rapidly.

Political party charts aren’t always too illuminating and I’m having a hard job seeing anything too uplifting on any of the possible charts – Lib Dems, Pisces, 3 March 1988; the earlier Lib-SDP Alliance. Gemini 16 June 1981; or even the old Liberal Party. Gemini 6 June 1859. There are flickers of Jupiter but nothing much holding. EU elections can be a protest vote which disappears at a General Election and polls can be misleading.

The two potential leaders – Jo Swinson, 5 February 1980 and Ed Davey, 25 December 1965 – to replace Vince Cable are equally not much help.

Jo Swinson, an Aquarius with a hard working Saturn in Virgo opposition Venus in Pisces and an exuberant Jupiter Mars in Virgo looks deflated from now and through 2020; with one lucky break from spring 2020 but that’s it.

Ed Davey, a Capricorn with Venus, Mars, maybe Moon in Aquarius, will get a boost July to this September but otherwise looks fairly swampy this year and next.

So not much the wiser.

  1. I have had a look at the composite charts between Layla Moran, Ed Davey and the Lib Dems. With Layla Moran, Mars is exactly conjunct Uranus, while Mercury is almost exactly conjunct Mars and Uranus. Ed, reportedly the narrow favourite to win, has a rather less exciting interaction.

  2. Very interesting to look back at this post and Tara’s addition now, over a year later, after Jo Swinson’s leadership ended in disaster at the General Election. Ed Davey is now standing again for the Liberal Democrat leadership in a delayed election, versus Layla Moran.

The vote closes tomorrow and is believed to be close. Layla Moran is almost exactly the same age as the Byelorussian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who is now in exile in Lithuania.

  3. Thanks Marjorie. It’s rather difficult with such a small party, there isn’t much space for their fates to be all that different politically. However, it’s interesting to see the type of candidate being put forward; both have only one fire planet and both have that planet on the tip of a t-square (and mini-grand trine in the case of Jo Swinson). Both charts are receiving hits from eclipses and planetary stations over next 18 months and Neptune next year, as is the NN of the 1988 Lib Dem Chart (also just realised they were formed the day of a lunar eclipse 13 Pis/Vir).

Jo Swinson’s focal point lone fire planet is Neptune in Sagittarius, which is being hit by Neptune next year at the same time as the Lib Dem 1988 NN, as well as the 2020 Venus station at 21 Gemini. She also has Mars retrograde in her chart at 12 Vir and Ed Davey’s lone fire planet Mercury is at 12 Sagittarius, which ties in the Lib Dem natal lunar eclipse at 13 Pis/Vir, when the party formalised their alliance and merged into a new party. With the Mars Rx, I wonder if Swinson will lead first and later step down with Davey taking over, or some sort of co-leadership like the Greens have or merger with another party. This would be a reversal of the 1988 end of the alliance and two leaders, so it may not come to that..
