Jupiter square Saturn – hope versus realism

The Jupiter in Gemini square Saturn in Pisces hovering over the close of the old year and start of the new has produced an oddly disjointed mood to add to everything else. The square between high-hopes Jupiter and downbeat Saturn picked up in August 2024 and will run on to mid 2025 after which Jupiter in Cancer starts to pull away from Saturn in Aries.

In addition to mood swings, Jupiter square Saturn usually accompanies a time of faulty planning and judgement where actions are initiated and responsibilities taken on board without preparation. Of which the previous occasion in 2016 when Brexit was promoted and voted through is a prime example. Though added Neptune would also play its part; which will also be the June 2025 experience with Neptune in Aries conjunct Saturn and square Jupiter.

Timing can be bad since too much Jupiter brings over-optimism and too little discipline so makes charging ahead tempting. In contrast to an overdose of Saturn which induces a crisis of confidence and a reluctance to act.

The mythological background is revealing with Jupiter/Zeus inspiring messianic and Olympian aspirations – there are no limits to what can be achieved. And Saturn, the pragmatist, being tediously realistic, pointing to the inevitable limitations of life. Jupiter’s tendency to attempt too much leads to crash-landings so disappointment follows heady new beginnings.

Jupiter square Saturn will be obvious at a personal level as positive events and negative ones will come simultaneously. Good things and not such great things come side by side.

  1. At a personal level, Jupiter square Saturn can also mean that you are not allowed to do what you would like to do. The violinist, Yehudi Menuhin, loved woodwork, but he never really dared do much lest he injure his fingers. Our late Queen also had the square: I am sure there are lots of things she would have loved to have done and said had she not been a queen. Instead she had to show perpetual self-control and self-restraint.

  2. Re the Brexit chart (presumably the time of the declaration of the results of the referendum), Jupiter was exactly trine Pluto, conjunct the North Node and opposite Neptune as well, all of which would also have had some impact on Jupiterian exuberance.
That is best exemplified by the glum face of the rotund/large (Jupiter) Boris Johnson when he realised that his side had won unexpectedly.

    • Two further quick observations.

In June, not only are Jupiter and Saturn square each other, but Jupiter is sextile Mars and Saturn is sextile Pluto too. How would that impact the Jupiter and Saturn square?

I also noticed that the June location of Jupiter will be exactly conjunct my Ascendant and the Saturn will have just passed both my Sun and my MC. You have frequently mentioned the effect of tr Saturn passing the Ascendant and moving into the first quadrant in your posts. Can you cover the effect of tr Saturn passing the MC and its effects in the other quadrants? Also, does tr Jupiter have any such effects?

      • Jupiter is still transiting my first house. I have been taking supplements and observing my reaction to them for the whole year. Let just said I have been negligent in my self care thinking that all will eventually self heal like acne scars. I have also changed my beauty products used. Check your blood levels for iron, calcium, vit d and whatever else doctor recommend. Saturn in 10th house will just be work and discipline!!! Britney Spears’ song ‘”Work” might just become my personal anthem as yes Saturn will also be transiting my 10th house.

  3. Odd that you have depicted the planets as two horses similar to those that ran bloodied through the streets of London as a kind of omen in April 2024

The Jupiter Saturn square in 2024 began to form at the time of the Southport riots from 30 July 2024 and 5 August 2024. This saw Neptune retrograde at 29 Pisces opposing the U.K. Uranus at 1 Libra. The event was triggered by the Moon at 1 Gemini and saw Mars forming a conjunction with Jupiter that was exact at 16 Gemini on 14 August 2024

The Jupiter Saturn square in July 2025 is very interesting as it will be forming a T Square with the UK 1801 Uranus at 1 Libra. The two planets were in an extended conjunction in early Libra in 1981 during one of the most turbulent years in recent British history which coincided with soaring unemployment and riots in Brixton, Toxteth, Moss Side. A similar T Square between transiting Uranus at 4 Aries and Mars at 1 Cancer with the U.K. natal Uranus occured at the time of the 2011 riots. I would not be surprised if similar disturbances occurred this year. Possible triggers could be Mars aspecting the UK 1801 Jupiter and Saturn in Leo or the Uranus in Libra which happens in April, June and August of 2025. With luck once these aspects have cleared things will begin to resolve themselves by the end of 2026.

    • I had forgotten about that – it felt like an oddly momentous even overload with a significance or a portent of things to come.

    • The second paragraph of your post, about the Southport riots, ties in with the point made by Helen below about the current Labour government coming into power.

If there are riots, at the very least I hope that they are not race riots.

The Twitter/X debates on the H1B visas in the US reminded me of the UK in the 1960s (within living memory of WWII), when immigration and race were huge electoral topics in England. The Tory candidate in Smethwick, in the West Midlands, became notorious for his campaign of “If you want a <> for a neighbour, vote Labour”. (Marjorie, please take off the last sentence if you feel it is too offensive)

Are there any astrological similarities between today’s US and 1960s UK?

      • Hard to tell. Policing of the black community was an issue in 1981 but the riots were triggered by economic issues as well. The government seems to have taken no interest in examining the root causes of the 2024 riots apart from locking up the participants and labelling them all as racists. That lack of interest may well come back to bite them. Most of the disturbances occurred in some of the poorest areas of England which perhaps should have made people look a bit beyond the initial causes of the disturbances. Astrologically I just think the U.K. Uranus in Libra seems to be a trigger point for trouble. I have not looked back further to the great unrest of 1911-14 though I note that Pluto was moving into Cancer to square the U.K. 1801 Uranus in that period. I think people tend to forget how turbulent Britain was in the run up to the First World War. There were numerous riots, violent industrial disputes, Suffragette protests that included terrorist attacks and needless to say the ever present threat of civil war in Ireland.

        • I suspect that the re-emerging story about the abuse of girls in northern England may be the trigger for rioting. And with the reduced-in-number police stretched to its limits and the army quite reduced in numbers as well, I hope it doesn’t get too out of hand.

  4. It is interesting that Brexit is mentioned. As in my head this morning, I was thinking of the similarities between the initial Brexit Government and Britain’s current new one. Joy over leadership, yet unwilling to compromise. Almost a religious (Jupiter) zeal for complete (Saturn) authoritarian rule.
