Jane Fonda – elegant in her mid eighties

Jane Fonda looking magnificent on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival says “I don’t feel like an old person. I’m much younger than I was when I was in my 20s, in all the ways that matter’. She still works out with a trainer every day to keep trim.

She was born 21 December 1937 9.14 am New York the daughter of actor Henry Fonda and a socialite mother who committed suicide when she was 12. Her father gave her a sense she had to be perfect and she contracted bulimia which continued well into her forties. Recently she said she always felt she had to seek the validation of men in order to prove that she had value and as a consequence, she attached herself to “alpha males”, some of whom reinforced her feelings of inadequacy, despite her professional success. She was married to French film director Roger Vadim who turned her into an almost soft-porn star; author/activist Ted Hayden who was dismissive of her talents and billionaire Ted Turner was diagnosed bi polar.

Now she says she’s given up on close relationships, having owned up to being frightened of emotional intimacy, though scared of nothing else, having been shot at and been close to bombs.

She’s had an extraordinary life moving form a seemingly  shallow, surgically enhanced mannequin to a reviled anti-Vietnam activist who betrayed her country as Hanoi Jane. Two Oscars came her way (Klute and Coming Home) and her fitness videos remain popular which she started to raise money for her left-wing second husband Tom Hayden’s activist cause.

She has a Sun Sagittarius on the focal point of a Mutable T square to Saturn in regretful Pisces in a creative opposition to a film-star 8th house Neptune. Her Sun is also sextile Mars in determined Aquarius and inconjunct Pluto on her Descendant, which latter would attract her to controlling and intense partners. She’d also be dependent at points in her life with a 7th house Leo Moon.  Her Venus in Sagittarius square Neptune would not help to anchor her in committed relationships.

Her 3rd house activist Uranus is unaspected which can indicate too much or too little reforming zeal – or more likely spurts of high-octane activity and fallow periods in between. She also has an enthusiastic Jupiter on her Ascendant in a pushily-confident opposition to Pluto.

Her Mars in determined Aquarius is sextile her Sun. widely opposition her Moon and inconjunct her Pluto – so she’s not short of courage.

Her relationship charts with both her parents have composite Mars Pluto hard aspects suggesting a one-sided relationship, requiring submission from her as a child.

Jupiter moving through her 5th at the moment will put her in the spotlight though tr Neptune square her Sun may reduce her vitality somewhat into early 2026. And tr Uranus square her Mars this June and on and off into 2026 may knock some of her plans off track.

  1. Is it astrologically accurate to say she betrayed her country?
The men who got the US in that war and forced young men to die (mostly poor men) those are the people who betrayed their country. The war was not started for honorable reasons. The young people of the era know that and protested-along with others of all ages and that ended the war. So please—she is not a traitor.

    • I don’t think Marjorie is saying Jane is a traitor – she is just listing how Jane was depicted in the public.

      • I don’t think she behaved honourably toward the Americans being held as prisoners of war, when one handed her a letter, which she immediately handed to their captors. She could see the condition of those men, and yet she did it anyway. Whatever your views on Vietnam, in that one act, she showed neither compassion nor honour: and for that reason alone, I consider her a traitor.

          • Jane Fonda should be enough of a reference. Or Hanoi Jane. Her reputation in this incident took a huge nosedive because of it.

        • Linda, A quick skip round the net on a variety of sites indicates this story is NOT TRUE. I do wish you and everyone else so inclined would not babble malicious gossip. Check it out before posting!

“It never happened. There was a real Colonel Carrigan, and he was a POW in Vietnam. But he never met Jane Fonda, and he has no idea how the maddening tale attached itself to him.

There were also rumors she turned over secret messages from POWs to their captors. This is not true.

The long-standing claim that Jane Fonda turned smuggled messages from U.S. POWs over to their North Vietnamese captors is false.
The facts are that while in North Vietnam, Fonda met with only a single group of seven U.S POWs: all seven of those POWs agreed to meet with her, no POWs were tortured for declining to meet with her (or for behaving inappropriately during the meeting), and no POWs secretly slipped Fonda messages which she turned over to the North Vietnamese. The persons named in inflammatory claims about this alleged incident have repeatedly and categorically denied the events they supposedly were part of.

          • Just to add the moniker Hanoi Jane was aimed at her because she posed on a tank by mistake and has ever since massively and constantly apologized for it.

          • Well we will have to agree to disagree. But I should point out that the press of the day were not at all supportive of her. And Jane did little to change their viewpoints, or anyone else’s. And many on both sides of the political divide were appalled by her behaviour.

There were interviews in newspapers and magazines. And documentaries made. And those interviews involved some of the survivors, their families and friends. Not one of them ever said that this didn’t happen.

But the British press, and perhaps the UK not being in Vietnam, had a different take on the whole thing. Which is why I am sceptical of an entirely different account, that chooses to ignore or whitewash certain events in modern history. And this sort of thing is common, more common than you think. And the Internet contributes greatly to it. Which of course seems to be to Ms Fonda’s advantage. History is kind to her today, because so many that were around at the time, are no longer with us. However historians in the future might dig a little deeper and prove otherwise.

          • Linda,
History did dig deeper and found the story to be misinformation.
See: Snopes, a fact-checking website, described as a “well-regarded reference for sorting out myths and rumors” on the Internet. It is a source for validating and debunking urban legends.

Despite the claims of other Vietnam veterans who maintain they were “there” and affirm that accounts like the “smuggled Social Security number betrayal” are true because they supposedly witnessed them, the fact is that Fonda met only seven American POWs while in North Vietnam: Edison Miller, Walter Wilber, James Padgett, David Wesley Hoffman, Kenneth James Fraser, William G. Byrns, and Edward Elias. None of those men reported her sabotaging their attempts to slip her information about themselves, and anyone other than those seven men who asserts he was “there” and witnessed such a scene is simply not telling the truth. Some of the POWs who actually did meet with Jane Fonda, such as Edison Miller, have spoken out on the record over the years to disclaim the apocryphal stories about her.”
Col. Larry Carrigan, the U.S. serviceman whose name is invoked, has affirmed that he neither claimed nor experienced any of what has been attributed to him, and that he never even met Jane Fonda:

“There is a principle which is a buffer against any information, which is proof against all argument and which does not fail to keep every human being in constant ignorance. This principle is to condemn before researching.” Herbert Spencer.
[I could not care less about Jane Fonda one way or the other – but I seriously dislike misinformation.]

  2. Thanks Marjorie. Jane continues to be inspirational and magnetic. I absolutely loved her (and Robert) in Barefoot in the Park.
I quite admire people in the latter stages of life who continue to lead a public life (Sheila Hancock, David Attenborough, Jane… )

    • Barefoot in the Park with those two makes me so happy when I watch it! Love it. In my astrological understanding, Uranus Trines the Mercury, earth to earth! Jane is enduring and ever seeking, I love that about her.

  3. I also noticed another Jane in the headlines: Jane Seymour, 74, who says she has been on the same nutritional regime that kept her a size 4 since her teens.
