Dick van Dyke – ever cheerful Sagittarius

Dick van Dyke, the legendary entertainer and comedian, will be 100 years old in less than a month. His performances on screen and stage over seven decades won him numerous awards and made him a household name with the Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Poppins and Diagnosis Murder. He has been married twice, with a long affair in between and most recently at 86 married a make-up artist 46 years his junior.

 He has an upbeat Sagittarius Sun conjunct Mercury sitting in his performing 5th house. But there are stand out features in his chart. One is a heavily aspected Neptune in Leo on his Ascendant which is trine his Sun and on the focal point of a yod inconjunct Uranus sextile Jupiter. His Neptune is also square Mars Saturn and Moon in Scorpio in his 4th hinting at a turbulent childhood. His Mars Saturn are also in a creative though stressed Water Grand Trine to Pluto trine Uranus. His spaced-out Neptune probably protected him from the difficulties of his childhood and his ever-optimistic Sagittarius Sun would also help.

Comedians often come out of difficult backgrounds which are at odds with their light hearted banter.

  1. I wonder what points to his longevity. Interesting w/ his Neptune/Leo conj. Asc. and square his Mars,Saturn and Moon/Scorpio. Neptune/Mars/Saturn, not the healthiest. His 8th h cusp Pisces ruled by Neptune. Maybe w/ Mars/Saturn in Scorpio, lots of tenacity which may figure into this. Also, Jupiter/6th sextiles both.

  2. Watched an interview where he said he’d like to play Scrooge on film. Those Scorpio planets are still there looking for expression

  3. I enjoyed his films and The Dick Van Dyke Show. But my favourite performance was when he played the murderer in one of the Columbo episodes. It is absolutely one the best episodes ever!

  4. Here are some famous comedians with Thalia aspects:
    Robin Williams, Thalia conj natal Sun; Eddie Murphy, Thalia in 5th, entertainer, aspect Sun;
    Chris Rock, Thalia sextile Sun, square Saturn; Jerry Seinfeld, Thalia conj Moon, sextile MH;
    Bill Cosby, Thalia aspects Sun; Jim Carrey, his Thalia has no aspect, goes wild as does
    his humor and facial grimaces, incontroled by any other planets.

  5. Thalia, the Muse of Comedy, is an asteroid that brings inspiration and creativity to those who work in the entertainment industry, particularly in comedy. In astrology, Thalia is often found in the natal charts of comedians, actors, and writers, indicating a strong potential for success in these fields. The asteroid Thalia is associated with the Sun and Saturn in the natal chart, which can suggest a career in comedy that brings joy and laughter to others. It is also known for its conjunction with the Moon, which can enhance the creative and emotional aspects of comedy. Thalia’s presence in a chart can be a sign of a person’s innate sense of humor and their ability to connect with audiences through their performances.
    Dick Van Dyke has Thalia, the god of comedy, aspecting his natal Sun-Mercury, in hi
    5th House of entertainment.
