Anthony Hopkins’ memoir title We Did OK Kid is a hint of his self-effacing view of himself, regarded by himself and others in childhood as “useless, hopeless”. Neither sporty nor academic and friendless, “I couldn’t do anything,” he says, until he tripped into acting, won a scholarship to drama college, followed by a RADA training.

  From unlikely beginnings he has made more than 90 films, won two Oscars, four Baftas, two Emmys and an Olivier award.

 Described in his early career as a “tortured loner” with an anger problem, he says of his social alienation – “It gives me a distance to observe. I may sound like a cold-hearted monster but I’m not. We all wear masks. It’s all part of the game.”

 The dominant personality in his autobiography is his father, whose “erratic” moods, “highs of manic energy” and desolate lows hint at bipolar disorder.

 Anthony Hopkins was born 31 December 1937 9.15 am (biography) Port Talbot, Wales, and has a highly complicated and contradictory chart  His Capricorn Sun, Mercury and Venus sit in his hidden 12^th which is the chart area ruling the unconscious and creativity. Capricorn itself although tarred with a materialistic, capitalist brush is also highly creative – the stander on the threshold between the watery realms of the imagination and the earthy realm where dreams are made real. Both fish and goat.

  What dominates his chart is a creative, though bleak Water Grand Trine of Pluto in his 7^th trine Saturn in final degree Pisces trine his Scorpio Midheaven. It is formed into three Kites by a super-confident Pluto opposition Jupiter, a creative and can-be-neurotic Saturn opposition an 8^th house Neptune and MC opposition IC. His immensely talented, inspirational vision is marked by multiple inventive, artistic strands. His Saturn opposition Neptune also squares a Sagittarius Moon giving him sensitivity where the public are concerned but a tendency early on to emotional disorganization as well.

 His Mars in Pisces sits midway between a Uranus trine Sun, Mercury, Venus which would give him an uncompromising approach to interference and a tendency to let fly with his opinions.

 During the recent LA fires he lost everything he possessed but seems to have shrugged it off as part of life. It occurred on 7 January 2925 when tr Mars was exactly conjunct his Pluto opposition tr Pluto conjunct his Jupiter  – so it may have made a sharper impression than he lets on. He tends to act as if nothing much touches him. There is a telling story from his childhood as he was sent off to boarding school at 11 that he vowed never to care about anyone (or anything) too much again.

  He has been married three times and has a daughter (estranged) from his first marriage. Luckily his third marriage appears to be happy.

Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has comfortably won the election to be New York City mayor against the scandal-prone Andrew Cuomo, who was endorsed by Donald Trump. Mamdani made campaign promises of free buses, no rent, fewer cops and higher taxes for the wealthy and big business which resulted in the highest turnout in more than 50 years. Though some are questioning whether he can deliver.

 There were several Democratic victories across the country in other special elections though commentators warn that the party’s brand is still under water, with its approval rating hitting a 30-year-low. A recent opinion poll found that 68% of Americans think Democrats are out of touch – more than the 63% who see Trump in the same way.

Mandani, born 18 October 1991 1.15 am Kampala Uganda, to an Indian family with a Muslim father and Hindu mother, is the first Muslim mayor-elect of New York. He grew up partly in South Africa, coming to the US when he was 7 and had a ‘privileged’ upbringing.

 He has a communicative 3^rd house Libra Sun conjunct an intense Mars in Scorpio in a hard-edged square to a 7^th house Saturn in Aquarius. His Mars is also conjunct Mercury in Scorpio in his 3^rd house, hence his ability and inclination to speak forcefully. He has the generational inspired and can-be-radical Uranus Neptune conjunction in Capricorn close to the North Node in his hard-working 6^th house trine a surprisingly frivolous and indulgent Jupiter Venus in Virgo in his financial 2^nd house. His 7^th house Aquarius Moon squares a 4^th house Pluto making him emotionally detached and intense at the same time.

  His Progressed Moon moving through his career 10^th for another 18 months will keep him focused and tr Pluto through his 7^th  for many years to come will ramp up his interactions with both allies and enemies. Assuming his birth time is accurate Jupiter through his 1st house from July 2026 onwards will give him a confidence boost. He has a fair way to go on his upward trajectory in his Saturn career cycle not reaching his peak till 2029 and for seven years thereafter.

New York mayor is a tough job so strains and stresses would inevitably crop up no matter who was at the helm. Neptune back into Aries early in 2026 will bring a few failed plans for him in May, June 2026 onwards with more anxiety from August 2026 and more so in 2027. 2028 looks to be a downer with his Solar Arc Saturn opposition his Jupiter. And his Solar Arc Uranus conjunct his Moon in 2028/29 hints at upsets and perhaps a shift in his popularity  with an unsettled electorate.

His relationship with Donald Trump who called his election “a nightmare” is hostility-on-steroids with a composite Pluto Mars Jupiter conjunction opposition Uranus and on one leg of a yod sextile Neptune inconjunct Saturn. Plus a disappointing, evasive composite Sun square Neptune. That is unresolvable dislike with an endless struggle for the upper hand and last word.

   Tr Neptune will undermine their composite Pluto and conjunct the Uranus from now through till late January 2026 with the fanatical dislike on both sides lighting up the ether. Tr Saturn in Pisces will also ramp up the dislike mid January to mid February 2026. Tensions will erupt into the open. That last is also a point that shows up as high stress on the New York chart itself.

 Mamdani’s reforming Uranus is conjunct the New York (1 January 1898) Capricorn Sun so he will push on with progressive changes. The relationship chart between him and NY does not point to an easy association – with an argumentative, overly dominant composite Mars Sun square Pluto which is being rattled considerably from late April through May 2026; and again mid January to early April 2027 with tr Uranus in hard aspect.  Late April 2026 as well, an uncertain tr Neptune square the composite Saturn will cause concern on and off into early 2027.

Add ON:  He is due to take up his office on midnight 1 January 2026. This puts a lucky, successful Jupiter in the 10^th though it does oppose the Mars/Pluto midpoint with Sun, Venus, Mars conjunct and Pluto all sitting in the domestic 4^th . It certainly suggests a highly active administration pushing ahead with extraordinary determination. Though running into resistance from a section of malcontented locals.  

Saturn Neptune Scheat in the 6^th will focus on health and employment with a view to improving the situation of those in need with help from a Jupiter trine which may not be enough to totally resolve the problem. Uranus in the 8^th trine a 4^th house Pluto points to financial issues and instability as well as a (maybe subversive?) radical agenda though it may have problems seeing the light of day. The 3^rd house Mercury = communication and local transport) is badly aspected being square Saturn Neptune and inconjunct Uranus – so difficulties getting the right message across and muddles in local travel.

Maria Riva, the mistreated daughter of Marlene Dietrich, whose memoir revealed a childhood spent as her mother’s ‘handmaiden’ and personal assistant, has died aged 100.

“At age three I knew quite definitely that I didn’t have a mother; I belonged to a queen,” she wrote in a searing biography published one year after Dietrich’s death in 1992 that portrayed her mother as “a heartless, manipulative, domineering narcissist who had demanded to be worshipped by her fans, her many lovers (male and female) and her daughter — but treated them abysmally.” Maria was denied formal schooling, was not told her true age by a mother determined to appear younger than she was.  In her teens Riva was repeatedly raped by her lesbian governess, turned to alcohol and contemplated suicide before she turned her life around and had a family of her own.

  Her father, an assistant film director, to whom Dietrich remained legally married, for appearances’ sake, was only an intermittent presence in her life. Dietrich’s lovers came and went: patriarch Joseph Kennedy, Maurice Chevalier, Gary Cooper, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Yul Brynner, Frank Sinatra, James Stewart, Adlai Stevenson, Edward Murrow, Édith Piaf.

Maria Riva, born 13 December 1924, Berlin, had one supportive companion in her childhood. Tami Matul, her father’s Russian mistress, described in public as Riva’s nanny and routinely abused by both Dietrich and her father. Riva wrote that Matul was forced to undergo 15 abortions “to ensure no scandal sullied the purity of my mother’s marriage” and ended up in a mental asylum. “During my entire youth Tami was my friend, the one person I loved the most,” Riva wrote.

  Maria, once she settled with her second husband, acted in TV shows and commercials through the 1950s and had four sons.

 She had a Sagittarius Sun conjunct Jupiter which was probably her saving grace giving her an innately optimistic outlook despite the horrors of her upbringing.  Her Sun Jupiter was trine a filmic Neptune and square an explosive Mars Uranus conjunction in Pisces for a life of constant turbulence and excitement. Her Cancer Moon was probably close to controlling Pluto for an enmeshed association with her mother that threatened to stifle her. Her Moon was also likely in a Water Grand Trine to a chilly Saturn in Scorpio conjunct Venus trine Uranus – giving her a life that existed in its own bubble of her mother’s demands and also possibly gave Maria a rich inner world of imagination into which to escape.

  Marlene, born 27 December 1901 9.15pm Berlin, had a powerful stellium in Capricorn with her Sun conjunct Mercury on the cusp of her performing 5^th house. And Jupiter Saturn Mars all conjunct in Capricorn in her attention-seeking 5^th in varying combinations inconjunct a 10^th house Pluto and Neptune in Gemini. A whole load of super-ambitious, over-indulgent Capricorn with a cruel streak from Saturn Mars, heavily controlling from Pluto in the 10^th though also able to cast a dreamy spell with Neptune. Her Leo Moon on the cusp of her hidden 12^th house is not well integrated into her chart making her disconnected and emotionally unstable.

  Her Scorpio North Node hinted that her spiritual journey and life’s development lay in relinquishing all that she had once coveted. Evidently. ‘By the end of her life Dietrich was living alone in a squalid Paris flat — reclusive, bedbound, hooked on assorted drugs and using kitchen dishes as bedpans.’ Whether this brought any redemptive insight is not known.

 The relationship chart between Maria and her mother had a superficially glossy composite Jupiter Venus opposition Pluto though with undertones of a power struggle which only emerged after Marlene’s death and the tell-all biography emerged. Plus a composite yod of Mars sextile Sun inconjunct Neptune hinting at the emotional disorganization of their bond.

Dick Cheney, a dominant figure in US politics, Secretary of Defence under George H Bush and VP under George W Bush from 2001 to 2009, has died. He was a key architect of the “war on terror” after 9/11 and an early advocate of the disastrous invasion of Iraq in 2003. He later became a bitter critic of the Republican Party under Trump and was a long-standing advocate of Nato expansion into Eastern Europe, backing Ukraine’s bid in 2008.

 Born 30 January 1941 7.30 pm Lincoln, Nebraska, he had a hard-working 6^th house Aquarius Sun opposition Pluto square Jupiter Saturn in Taurus. He would be enduring with so many Fixed planets, stubborn, controlling – with, arguably, Jupiter Saturn’s tendency to fly high and then come crashing down. He also had an Earth Grand trine of Uranus in the international 9^th trine Neptune trine a 5^th house Venus in Capricorn – security based, a good organizer, a builder in life, tending to lack imagination. Plus an unaspected 4^th house Mars = uncompromising, in constant activity, unrestrained. And a 7^th house Pisces Moon opposition Neptune and sextile Uranus which hints at softer emotional side which sits at odds with his determined earthy temperament.

 His relationship chart with George W Bush had a gung-ho, impulsive composite Sun opposition Mars square Jupiter which sent them into an ill-advised attack on Iraq; with tr Jupiter conjunct the composite Pluto when it occurred as well, also egging them on to an overly-confident push..

Cheney’s relationship with Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defence over Iraq, who died in 2021,  also had hints of over-enthusiasm from composite Sun, Jupiter, Pluto; overlaid with aggravation and bad luck from Mars Saturn.

  Given that Iraq did more to damage the USA’s standing than any other recent event, Cheney’s relationship chart with the USA with a Sun opposition Pluto square Saturn makes sense of a war which did not bring praise and plaudits.

 Two years earlier at 9/11 tr Pluto was hovering around the conjunction to his 4th house Mars, producing fear and a profound shock; with the Solar Arc Sun square his Pluto; and tr Neptune moving to square his Jupiter Saturn in the aftermath. By the Iraq Attack in March 2003 his Solar Arc Saturn was nearly conjunct his Pluto; with his Solar Arc Sun squaring his Jupiter Saturn in the calamitous aftermath. And undermining tr Neptune conjunct his Sun was in place by the autumn 2003. Tr Uranus was also opposition his SA Midheaven as well.  As astrological pileup.

 He fell out with GW Bush in the time that followed though stayed in place till 2009.

 Cheney’s chart relocated to Iraq puts Mars in the hidden 12^th, Pluto in the trapped 8^th and his Jupiter Saturn in the 4^th. There is also a yod of Mars sextile Midheaven inconjunct a 5^th house emotionally-excitable Uranus. Uranus on the focal point of a yod suggests a connection that was a catalyst for extreme change on the part of both – as Iraq descended into chaos and Cheney’s reputation took a hit from which it never recovered.

 A new biography of Spain’s dictator for 40 years, General Franco, offers thought-provoking insights.

“In times of decline, nations often turn to authoritarians. This gives opportunities to otherwise mediocre men — toxic personalities unsuited to ordinary politics.”

“Franco personifies Spain’s final, losing battle with colonial decline.”   He saw himself as a new conquistador who would rejuvenate Spain by promoting its exceptionalism, banishing the poisonous influence of outsiders. However, isolation turned Spain into an economic disaster and a pariah.

  “His greatest weakness was his outsized, thin-skinned ego”. Though he had a ruthlessness and a cold-blooded talent for cruelty, using executions to terrorise the population. He confused fear with respect. 

Giles Tremlett, the author, in the end concludes that “Francoism worked by conjuring up ghosts”. Franco encouraged Spaniards to share his febrile fears of Jews, Freemasons, foreign money, competent women, interesting people and sex.

  Born 4 December 1892 12.30 am El Ferrol del Caudillo, Spain, he had a surprisingly Mutable (scattered) chart with a Sagittarius Sun opposition Pluto, Neptune, Moon in Gemini square Mars in Pisces.  Neptune Pluto conjunct is associated with megalomaniacs from Attila the Jun onwards, as well as Hitler and Mao Tse Tung. Mars square Pluto is brutal and ruthless, with Neptune adding a perverse edge. He certainly would have a fractious, aggravated and highly confused view of women with his Moon close to Neptune Pluto and square Mars – he evidently often used rape as a military tactic.

 His Saturn in Libra opposed Jupiter in Aries and trined his Pluto, Neptune, Moon making him prone to highs and lows; as well as hard-edged and callous.

 The early Spain chart, 19 January 1479 JC had its Mars in mid Pisces close to his and opposition Saturn in Virgo so he would tune into a cruel, destructive and military streak in the nation’s temperament.  That was triggered in 1898 which was evidently a seminal moment for the young Franco when Spain lost control of Cuba to the USA. At that point tr Pluto in Gemini was square the Spain Mars opposition Saturn for a crushing blow; and square Franco’s focal point Mars as well. It was also on Spain’s Uranus Return.

  Franco became Spain’s youngest general at 33 and became Head of State in 1936 when he was 44. When he took over in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, Spain was beginning to feel the effects of its Progressed Mars going retrograde which had been in place already for three years and continued until 2003.

 When he died in 1975 and the monarchy was restored, the Solar Arc Pluto was square Pluto on the Spain chart for a difficult transition leaving the past behind;  with tr Uranus conjunct the SA Sun for a radical change; and tr Pluto conjunct the North Node for a moment in destiny.

 Franco’s own chart at his death was stark with Solar Arc Mars exactly conjunct his Pluto and nearly Neptune and tr Pluto conjunct his Saturn exactly as well.

  An era ended but way long after it should have done.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves wrestling with the gap between Labour economic policy and fiscal stability let alone growth has tripped into a sinkhole over the mishandling of a private house rental. The details are complex, the assertions, corrections and obfuscations make a small matter hardly worth disentangling – but it is a political disaster, yet another, for the Starmer government. The markets would get rattled if he dumped her so she’ll probably stay for a while.

 Born 13 February  1979, Lewisham, England, she has a Fixed Sun and contrary Mars in Aquarius square Uranus in Scorpio which will make her stubborn and erratic, prone to impulse decisions.  Her Sun Mars are also trine Pluto sextile Neptune so no mistaking her over-arching ambition.

 All that is showing on her chart now (without birth time) us tr Pluto opposition her Jupiter which can be pushily confident though can also spark up conflicts with authority. Given that her Jupiter is unaspected it could magnify an innate tendency for her judgement to be under-developed. Her Jupiter is also square her Saturn/Neptune midpoint which can point to over-sensitiveness and egotism.

She is in calamity-zone at the moment with tr Uranus opposing her Mars/Saturn midpoint till later this week; returning next April.

  Her relationship chart with Keir Starmer is also fraught and nerve-stretched at the same time; moving into possible separations and upsets from late April 2026 right through till early 2027 as tr Uranus opposes their composite Sun and Venus till early 2027. Though whether that is her going, him going or both on the scrap heap isn’t clear. There is certainly a downward slide in their association with tr Neptune opposition their composite Pluto now until late January 2026, with an extra jolt mid February from tr Saturn opposition the Pluto.

 Her other transits to midpoints hint at major panic from late January 2026, with serious turbulence throughout the year.

A knife attack on ten passengers on a train in England sent police and security forces into overdrive though they have now downplayed any terrorist connection. There is however an uncomfortable feeling about elevated risk levels in seemingly mundane situations as well as recent street demonstrations of all ideological shades threatening to erupt into violence.

   On the UK chart at the moment tr Pluto has been trine the Uranus since early 2024 and is in place exactly now till early December.  On country charts my impression is that ‘soft’ aspects tend to act like ‘hard’ so the effect will be stronger. Uranus Pluto = rebellion, revolution, collapse of an old setup, chaotic, anarchic.

 Why this seems relevant is that the start of the Irish Troubles in 1968 which brought violence onto the UK mainland and disrupted everyday life because of fears of bombings – happened when tr Uranus was conjunct the UK Uranus for a Return. And the Solar Arc Uranus was square the UK Mercury in the 3^rd house of everyday communications and transport. Plus Solar Arc Pluto was square the UK financial Neptune, part of the central configuration of the UK chart.

 The Poll Tax riots of March 1990 flared up when tr Uranus was conjunct the UK Sun.

  This is only a passing thought but Uranus does seem to be a potent indicator on the UK chart for civil unrest. Given that tr Uranus will square the UK Pluto from June 2026 into 2027, more can be expected. Not quite French Revolution but the populace expressing their displeasure at the status quo and the authorities’ inability to get a grip.

 The Starmer government chart has Mars Uranus conjunction in the 8^th with Uranus conjunct Algol which may be another factor. Not that the violence is his fault but he is taking the blame for not being able to resolve all the ills that are befalling the country. He picked the wrong time to be elected.

Charles finally acted in the interests of the monarchy stripping his brother Andrew of title and home as status and reputation won out over family.

 Charles’ 10th house Taurus North Node has an implicit momentum towards career and public life -and with his Solar Arc Pluto conjunct his 4^th house South Node exactly this year he clearly felt the time had come to follow his destiny and cut loose from an old family dilemma. Much of the blame for this sadly belongs to Queen Elizabeth 11 who must have been informed by the security services and political advisers of Andrew’s more than questionable financial dealings and all the rest.

 No doubt Prince William would have kept up the pressure since his relationship with his uncle is dire – with a composite Saturn, Neptune Mars conjunction which tr Uranus started to oppose this year and will continue on for another two years or more – so he won’t be backing off and there may be more to come to raise his ire.

 Sibling rivalry has haunted the Royals over the past three generations. Charles and Andrew have a competitive and aggravated composite Sun, Mars, Mercury sextile Saturn in their relationship chart. Andrew’s yod focal point Uranus is conjunct Charles’ 1^st house Pluto – so they are chalk and cheese with Andrew on a mission to de-stabilise Charles’s influence. Andrew’s Pluto is also conjunct Charles’ Saturn for a no-win tussle (over money).

 Queen Elizabeth had her own problems with her sister the wayward Princess Margaret; with Margaret’s rebellious Uranus square Queen Elizabeth’s overly conscientious 6^th house Pluto. Their relationship chart had an implacable and fairly toxic composite Mars square Pluto.

  There was an undercurrent with Margaret of her trying to upstage Queen Elizbeth which is certainly the case with Harry whose Pluto is conjunct William’s Midheaven Jupiter – so the barbs and attacks are Harry’s way of trying to control William and bring down (damage) his reputation. No doubt to bolster his weak self-esteem.

 Even one generation before – though the situation was different with the spare having no desire to be monarch – the abdicated Duke of Windsor’ Midheaven was conjunct King George V1’s Mars with his retreat causing a good deal of anger. Their relationship chart was nerve-stretched and a recipe for confusion with a composite yod of Uranus sextile Moon inconjunct Neptune Pluto.

  There is nothing to indicate a healing of William and Harry’s relationship – indeed it may worsen over the turn of the decade into the early 2030s.

 Princess Beatrice and Eugenie will be undermined by tr Saturn Neptune in Aries now and through 2026 and beyond on their birth charts; with considerable strain and anxiety between them and their father.

  My own personal thoughts are that Charles who was always known to be thin skinned about attention being diverted from his ‘public performances’ would have been enraged about his historic Vatican visit being over-shadowed, let alone being heckled after that. There may well be more to come since the media are on the hunt and Andrew’s financial capers were egregious and glossed over at the time.  The real risk is that public anger over Andrew will force open a Pandora’s Box where the Royal finances are concerned.

A celebrity break up memorialised in an album of songs about betrayal, heartbreak, public humiliation and bitterness has sent the gossip media into a flutter. Lily Allen, a super-successful singer, talk show host, record label owner and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination actress, has had a riotous life.

 I confess I had never heard of her but her wiki entry is astonishing with admissions of an early abortion, followed by a still birth, then post-natal depression following two live children, an affair with Liam Gallagher and her hiring female prostitutes.  David Harbour, her second, now ex-husband, is well known for Stranger Things and Marvel blockbusters.  In the version that comes across in her songs he appears to have been upset by her success. She has been diagnosed bi-polar and ADHD.

Born 2 May 1985 in London, she has a Taurus Sun opposition Pluto in Scorpio which will make her defensive, stubborn and inclined to over control. She also has Saturn in Scorpio, North Node in Taurus and Jupiter in Aquarius which will give her endurance but not much in the way of flexibility. What gives her a ‘no-filter’ approach will be her yod of Pluto sextile Neptune inconjunct Mars in Gemini so she will be erratic in the way she handles her assertion and self-will.

 David Harbour, 10 April 1975, New York has his Sun, Mercury, Moon and Jupiter in Aries which does chime with her Venus Mercury in Aries and his Venus in Taurus will fit with her Taurus Sun; and his Pluto opposes her Venus for a passionate undercurrent. But His Uranus conjunct her controlling Pluto is a red flag since he’d constantly try to loosen her grip. And his Mars in stubborn and contrary Aquarius square her Saturn and trine her Pluto is an absolute no-no, sparking off aggravation and resentment.

 That translates in their relationship chart to a brutal struggle for the upper hand Mars opposition Pluto and an irritable Mars inconjunct Saturn  with admittedly a little icing sugar sprinkled om top from an affectionate composite Sun Venus.

   They married in La Vegas on 7 September 2020, the wedding officiated by an Elvis Impersonator, which date echoes the relationship itself. A head-in the-clouds, delusional Sun opposition Neptune; Venus opposition a super-aggravated Saturn Pluto square Mars. Plus an impulsive, seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time Sun trine Jupiter trine Uranus.

   Nothing in hindsight that looks like a good idea.

ADD ON: Her father Keith Allen, Welsh actor, pantomime star, comedian, musician and television presenter has had a chequered life himself, admitting to having produced six children by four women. He had an unsettled childhood with a naval father, was expelled from school, ended up in borstal and a detention centre, and was later expelled from the Welsh College of Music and drama.

 In his 30s he served a 21-day jail sentence after being found guilty of criminal damage at in Covent Garden club.

He once remarked “I have a history of having suspicions about the establishment and the government”.

More than quite a character and may explain a good deal about Lily’s choice of partners and fractured emotional life.

 Keith Allen, 2 September 1953, is a Sun Virgo but what dominates his chart is an angry, fired-up Mars Pluto conjunction in Leo on the midpoint of a Saturn Neptune in Libra trine Jupiter in Gemini.
