“History does not repeat itself but often rhymes.”
Actually it can repeat , though on occasion it provides a new slant on old patterns. Russia on the verge of a Saturn Neptune conjunction which oversaw the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 (in first half Leo) and again when Stalin died in 1953 with Saturn Neptune conjunct in late Libra (and Karl Marx’s death in 1883 in Taurus) shows no obviously signs of an imminent convulsion. But hopes are running high of a shift in direction.
The Russia 8 December 1991 7.45pm chart does point to a high risk year ahead with Solar Arc Mars conjunct the Uranus, exact mid 2026, which will bring insecurity, perhaps violence, certainly an explosive shock. This is followed by confusion if not outright devastation from SA Neptune square Pluto late 2026 into 2027. In the background hardship and deprivation from tr Pluto conjunct the Saturn all year. 2027/28 has more insecurity and possible violence from tr Uranus opposition the Mars. Outright revolution by 2029, certainly turmoil and massive changes with SA Uranus square the Pluto.
The Russia 8 November 1917 2.12am chart also has insecurity/possible violence as tr Uranus squares the Mars from June 2026 into early 2027; at the same time tr Neptune will square the Pluto for an undermining of influence and power. With confusion/devastation from tr Pluto opposition the Neptune in 2027/28.
Not an easy path ahead, for sure.
Putin’s 5th term chart, 7 May 2024, also has tr Neptune bringing panic, failure and dissolving plans from mid 2026 onwards as it is conjunct the Term Mars in Aries.
His original Presidency chart from 31 December 1999 points to a grind-to-a-halt moment with Solar Arc Pluto conjunct the Sun in 2027. Though it also looks rattled at the moment until mid March 2027 with tr Uranus square the Mars.
Interesting to contemplate that the 1917 chart saw its Mars go retrograde by progression late in 2005 as Putin’s clamp-down began in earnest and won’t go direct again until late this century.
Donald Trump’s chart relocated to Moscow hints at money being the main draw as well as secrets with his Sun Uranus North Node falling in the joint financial 8th and his Moon in the personal finances 2nd.
Relations between the USA and both Russia charts look unsettled for the next few months, chilly and distrustful. Though the main antagonist for Russia would appear to be the EU with pressures mounting through 2026 and flare ups in 2027.

All this is deeply worrying to me, not because I carry a candle for Russia, but because Russia has the world’s second-largest nuclear arsenal and I would rather have a stable authoritarian regime in charge of that nuclear arsenal than chaos with nuclear weapons in the hands of terrorists. Better the known devil than the unknown one, etc. I’m all for democratisation, but not to the point of lots of people having access to nuclear weapons.
Russia is a federation and does have sub-national entities with a lot of diversity and it is not impossible that without a strong hand in Moscow, the sub-national entities, particularly in the Far East, will break away and possibly align with China, while the sub-national entities in the south (Dagestan/Chechnya, etc) may fall to Islamic terrorists.
Marjorie, is there anything in the charts that Russia as we know it now, from Moscow to Vladivostok, will simply cease to be and be reduced to the old Duchy of Muscovy/a European rump state?

Thanks for the reminder about Putin’s original Presidency chart Marjorie. The February 2026 Solar Eclipse in Aquarius will conjunct that Mars in Aquarius (sextile Jupiter in Aries), with tr Uranus square the Eclipse. Just three days later Saturn and Neptune are conjunct at 0 Aries. A tricky moment?
I thought it might be worth looking all the way back at the Russia 862 chart – it has Sun 1 Libra conjunct Saturn, with the MC 3 Libra. Tr Saturn and Neptune will oppose that Saturn/Sun, putting pressure on a longstanding leader maybe? It also has a mix of air and fire which is of interest with the new airy, fiery planet patterns approaching.
The Aquarius and Aries combination shows up – Neptune 21 Aquarius sextile Pluto 18 Aries, trine Jupiter 20 Gemini. Mars is 16 Leo. Looking at Tsars Putin has admired –
Peter (the not always Great), 9 June 1672: Saturn 1 Aries sextile Neptune 5 Aquarius. Asc 5 Aries, MC 2 Capricorn
Catherine the Great, 2 May 1729: Nodes 20 Aquarius sextile Chiron 22 Aries. Saturn 7 Pisces square Neptune 9 Gemini. Neptune trines Pluto, 8 Libra. Asc 28 Aquarius
Alexander III, 10 March 1845: Saturn 14 Aquarius sextile Jupiter 10 Aries. Neptune 24 Aquarius sextile Pluto 22 Aries, Moon 18 Aries. Stellium in Aries – Moon, Jupiter, Uranus, Pluto.
The Romanoff Dynasty, 3 March 1613 also has Saturn 19 Pisces opposing Neptune 25 Virgo, with Uranus 22 Gemini and Mars 19 Gemini. So although lacking the fire theme, it does show Saturn and Neptune working (or not) together.
Thank you, Jane, for looking at the older Russia chart. I was wondering why Saturn-Neptune conjunctions seem to be such a trigger point for Russia and its rulers.
Extending the line back from Stalin and Nicholas II, Alexander II (Nicholas II’s grandfather) was assassinated in 1881, one Saturn-Neptune conjunction further back, and the Crimean War was in progress the previous Saturn-Neptune conjunction. So it is a violence trigger point for Russia and its rulers going back a few times.
Are there any astrological parallels with the reign of Nicholas I? He was an extremely autocratic emperor, who was ruthless in dealing with his adversaries. In addition, his reign closed with a devastating war with France and Britain, which exposed Russia as a paper tiger.
Thanks for this.
Some similarities. Nicholas took up the throne in 1825 with a can-be-fanatical Uranus Neptune conjunction in Capricorn and a megalomaniac Neptune square Pluto. Putin took over with Uranus Neptune conjunct in Aquarius sextile Pluto – a milder version but equally intransigent.
Putin does exhibit some of Nicholas’ paranoia – “We can expect nothing from the West but blind hatred and malice…”
In the Crimean War by 1854 Russia found herself in a war with every Great Power of Europe either allied against her militarily or diplomatically. After the prolonged Siege of Sevastopol the base fell, exposing Russia’s inability to defend a major fortification on its own soil. On the death of Nicholas I, Alexander II became emperor. In 1856, the new emperor took Russia out of the war on very unfavourable terms, which included the loss of a naval fleet on the Black Sea.
The fall of Putin would have major repercussions for the US, Ukraine and the EU. Hopefully, a regime more friendly to the West will emerge. In the Saturn-Neptune conjunction previous to 1917, Karl Marx died. In the one before that, he opened the Brusssels office which served as the first international HQ for Communist parties everywhere. Saturn-Neptune conjunctions have a strong link to Russia and to Communism.
