John Candy – smiles hid inner troubles

John Candy, much beloved star of Uncle Buck, Stripes, Splash , Brewster’s Millions, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Cool Runnings has had a celebratory documentary made, thirty years after his death.

Renowned for being helpful in real life as well as portraying likable and buoyant screen personalities, he had another side to him with self-admitted mental health problems with severe anxiety and panic attacks. He also had an obesity problem as well as an alcohol, cigarette and cocaine habit – all of which contributed to his death at 43 from a heart attack.

He was born 31 October 1950 in Toronto, Canada, with his father dying of heart problems, aged 35, when John Candy was five. He had wanted to be a professional footballer but an injury put an end to that dream and he started acting when in college.

He had an intense and charming Sun, Mercury, Venus in Scorpio in a mischievous and freedom-loving trine to Uranus (Moon) in Cancer. His Uranus (Moon) were square Neptune which can be highly strung. And there was a complex dance between his Pluto, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. His Pluto opposed Jupiter for confidence and trined Mars for super-determination though with an underlying element of fear. His Saturn opposition a Pisces North Node squared Mars for a self-destructive streak and fear about the dangers of life; with his Jupiter inconjunct Saturn for a constant wobble between highs and lows.

When he died suddenly in his sleep on 4 March 1994 there was a pressured tr Pluto North Node opposition Algol square Mars; with Mars approaching a conjunction to his Saturn a few days later. His difficult stars were all congregating together.

Comedians always do seem driven by inner troubles.

  1. Candy has Moon 6 Cancer opp Hippo, 6 Capricorn. Here is Sepharial on that degree
combo….”A nature of waseful and unpractical habits. The native will be inclined to
habits of excess…” Candy was into cocaine and drugs.

  2. John Candy has Thalia in his 10th of career, in his rectified chart.
Thalia, the Greek goddess of comedy, played a significant role in the development of comedy as a form of art and entertainment. She was the Muse of Comedy and was often depicted with a comic mask and a shepherd’s staff. Thalia’s influence extended beyond ancient Greece, as her spirit of laughter and joy resonated through various forms of comedy in modern times. Comedians, playwrights, and poets have all sought Thalia’s inspiration, using her attributes to create works that challenge norms, tackle social issues, and provide entertainment. Thalia’s legacy continues to inspire comedians and entertainers today, reminding us of the power of laughter in bringing people together and addressing the complexities of human life.

  3. Thanks for doing this write up Marjorie, i heard recently that often Cancer Moons can intuitively tap into what people/the public wants in that moment, and adapt to changing sentiments / fashions. Kurt Cobain died a month later, another Cancer Moon who captured the mood.

  4. Interesting collection of Scorpio planets in his chart. There’s a homeliness about him, which explains his Moon in Cancer, however I had always had him down as a highly earthy Taurean personality, certainly not as fearful as he was.
