Matt Goss is back in the UK after an 11 year solo Vegas residency talking sadly of the estrangement from his twin brother Luke, formerly part of the teen sensation Bros in the late 1980s. They were the biggest band in Britain, peroxide bombshells in leather jackets with eight Top 10 singles. Then they split acrimoniously since apparently, Luke was jealous that Matt got more attention. They reformed for a 2016 London concert, the subject of a documentary in which the brothers scream at one another.
Since they are twins and the birth times are available it is interesting to see what a difference ten minutes can make. Their early life was not easy with their parents splitting up when they were five and they moved house 11 times as children.
Luke is the elder, born 29 September 1968 6.11 pm Lewisham, England, with a rebellious, independent-minded Sun Uranus in Libra in his 7th house of relationships. He has a confident, strong-minded Jupiter Pluto conjunction on his Descendant and an intense, secretive Venus on the cusp of his 8th.
Matt born 6.21pm has his Jupiter Pluto in his hard-working 6th – with his Uranus conjunct his Descendant. Neither will find compromise easy with a Sun Uranus conjunction – and both will be keen to be seen as important with Jupiter Pluto conjunct, marginally more so in the case of Luke. Both have problems with identity with a 1st house Chiron. A yod onto a forced-to-be-self-reliant Saturn in Aries inconjunct Neptune and Jupiter Pluto hints at the need for maturity to make it work well.
A North Node in Aries also hints at a need to walk an independent road in life.
Not designed to be a twosome.
Luke always seemed like the more stable and private one. He was even in a 33 year relationship with Shirley Lewis of which he was married 23 years to her. Whereas Matt seems to float from one relationship to the other and seems like he’s more of a dreamer. Luke now acts these days and is pretty decent carving out his own lane.
As Marjorie says, Luke has Pluto on the descendant, Matt has Uranus there. You probably couldn’t find two more opposite approaches to relationships – Pluto = I want to merge with you / Uranus = give me space to my self. And as you say, those placements play out in how their other relationships have gone.
As I half wrote below, it’s a fascinating insight into how people hide parts of themselves away because, they arguably both have Pluto and Uranus on the descendant and all the other associated placements. So they are each projecting a part of themselves onto the other that they fear – and which is what 7th-8th house is about as well as Libra-Scorpio which they are heavy in. Growing up together, it’s easy to imagine how each would have ‘grabbed’ a part of the chart leaving the other to pick up the other bit.
And as Marjorie says, they have Chiron in the 1st along with Saturn so poor sense of self and very little below the horizon to help them develop it.
The documentary “After the screaming stops” is a fascinating watch. There were a couple of touching moments where they went back to look at their childhood home. But I always got the sense neither was expressing a deeper emotion and really trying to sort through the difficulties of their relationship.
It seemed the difficulties are driven by one of them acting out his Capricorn moon (perfectionist about the upcoming concert) to be thoroughly unreasonable to the point where the other explodes because he’s tired of giving in. And with all those planets in 7th/8th particularly Scorpio Mercury/Venus/Neptune – he could find it easy to have a long fuse.
Of course, with the documentary editing we don’t necessarily see all aspects of the relationship and how the seemingly quiet one might be getting under the other’s skin. All relationships only exist while the status quo is maintained and, for whatever reason, it seems when one (or both) of them get pushed too far they break it off.
From the perspective of astrological analysis, it’s interesting to look at them as twins with essentially the same placements but seeming to act very differently.
Both brothers have Mercury-Uranus sextile Mars, yelling in their dwad charts.
To see how the twins are really different, for each twin, create their dwad
chart. A dwad chart divides each sign into 12 equal parts, of 2degrees30
minute segments. Solar fire does this for you. Look at both dwad charts.
Matt has Mars ruling his 3rd of brothers, leading to disputes.
Matt has Uranus, r1st, conj Mercury, brother….so he would want to distant
himself from his brother and lead an independent life.
Luke has Uranus, r3, brother, conj Mercury, brother….so he also wants
to stay away from brother Matt.

Martha, Your analysis is always bang on! You incorporate many techniques I’ve never heard of. I’m now heading off to run the dwad charts for my twin nieces.
I haven’t got to grips with the Part of Fortune, but I know if you put any weight on ancient astrology zodiacal releasing, it impacts the releasing periods. I notice there PoFs are in different signs, which along that thinking would indicate different paths.
@Louisa,
Thank you, may I ask if you could explain a bit more about “releasing periods”?
Hi Beth, I wish I could with any decent knowledge. They relate to chapters of life, some supposedly easier to navigate than others. The sign which your PoF is in natally dictates your first chapter, but the length varies. For Gemini (e.g.Luke), his first chapter of fortune lasted 20 years, with a 4th house dominance ruled by Mercury in the 8th (whole sign). Then it ‘releases’ to the next sign. For Matt (whole sign) he started in the 5th, Cancer ruled by an 11th house Moon for 25 years. It might indicate they experienced it all rather differently. There is an episode of The Astrology Podcast on YouTube that goes into details and there is a calculator online to find out your own. I’m not sure about them but don’t know enough. One thing I heard which has felt true for me is when the ruling planet of the PoF hits its natal point, that day can bring the feeling of a ‘fated’ event. These would be the ancient rulers. If your PoF is in Cancer, you might feel that once a month with the Moon, but a Saturn ruled PoF, the fated event is not quite so often! See how you find the technique.
