Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, daughter of the founder, was released in Canada after a three year tug of war over financial fraud charges. She agreed she had made untrue statements that put HSBC at risk in violating U.S. sanctions on Iran, but was allowed to formally plead “not guilty”. In return China released two Canadians – a former diplomat turned analyst and an entrepreneur who had been held in what was described as hostage diplomacy.

This was quite a shock for Canada-China relations and is part of a general worsening of trade relations between the West and that economic superpower. China clearly engaged in hostage diplomacy, which is frightening foreign investors and trade partners. At least Canada, which got mixed up in this at the request of the FBI and paid dearly for its cooperation with its US neighbor by being caught between both superpowers, got strong support from Biden and other allies. Chinese papers are saying today that the two Canadians admitted their crimes and were released on medical grounds with no mention of Huawei or a Cold War trade of prisoners. Those men were held for over a thousand days on trumped-up charges with little or no access to lawyers or diplomats with lights on 24 hours, while the Chinese lady in Vancouver lived in a luxury home she owned and could buy the best Canadian lawyers. I hope she learned something about the rule of law and an independent judiciary. The time has come for containment of China, a strategy that worked well in the long term against the USSR but will be even more difficult this time. The next hurdle will be the Beijing Winter Olympics in February. It is doubtful the West will attend in light of the Uyghur genocide. Globalization could unravel bringing major economic problems. In Canada’s chart, transiting Uranus is now conjunct Pluto in opposition to Saturn in Scorpio. The last time this happened was 1939.
