Chiron in Taurus – money, medicine, environment

Chiron moving into Taurus on June 19th to stay until 2033 will shift the culture though in subtle ways which may not be immediately obvious.

The recent Chiron in Aries since 2018 would turn a focus on problems of identity with a compensatory emphasis/over-emphasis on “I am”. Which fits both Donald Trump in his 1st Term and Boris Johnson dancing to the “I am the greatest” fanfare, which is a cover up for “I am an empty shell with no idea who I am inside” pseudo-identity. The aftermath and ongoing divorce from the EU over Brexit as the UK faced up to going-it-alone could also be part of it. The rise of populism which is essentially a selfish movement. #MeToo Movement = I will not be overlooked.  At a stretch, the echo chamber/divisive syndrome also can be put down to people clinging desperately to the like-me tribe in order to shore up a shaky sense of self-esteem and identity.

It could also have contributed to the focus on wounds around masculinity and concepts like the “manosphere”, “toxic masculinity.”

Melanie Reinhart also mentions ‘life changing initiatory illness, which includes sickness in our sense of self.’

Chiron in Taurus has a tendency to undermine a sense of feeling solid or safe. Issues around wealth and money. Tendency to take everything literally not symbolically. Identify with our wounded instincts which would have the advantage of making our mistreatment of the earth be taken personally and acted on. Healthy relationship with the body.  Live by our own values. Creative transformation of emotional energy which would otherwise to be turned to vengeance. Helps others in their creative endeavours.

One problem looking back on earlier instances of Chiron in Taurus is extrapolating what can be ascribed to Chiron rather than other influences of the time.

Chiron in Aries 1968 to 1976

It started with booming post-war expansion but into the early 1970s there was a shift into high inflation and high unemployment. The collapse of the Bretton Woods monetary system in 1971 and the 1973 oil crisis, led to Western economies faced severe industrial unrest and stagnant growth.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. First Human Heart Transplant. The precursor to the modern internet sent its first message.

The early 1970s saw the wind-down of the Vietnam War, and Nixon Visits China ending decades of Sino-American isolation and reshaping the Cold War.

There were pioneering environmental campaigns.

Watergate, Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland and Munich Olympics Massacre.

Chiron in Taurus 1976 to 1983

The late 1970s saw increased geopolitical tensions and energy crises. The Camp David Accords were signed, brokering peace between Egypt and Israel. In Guyana, over 900 members of the Peoples Temple cult died in the Jonestown massacre.

The Iranian Revolution began, leading to the hostage crisis.  Margaret Thatcher became the first female UK Prime Minister. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident occurred in the US.

The first Apple Computer was sold.

The early 1980s saw the intensification of the Cold War, the birth of the PC and MTV era, the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and major political shifts under Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

Chiron in Taurus 1927 to 1933

The peak and sudden collapse of post-WWI economic prosperity, Wall Street Crash, the Great Depression.

Penicillin Discovered, the world’s first antibiotic. The first electronic television.  Aviation firsts. Pluto Discovered. Neutron discovered (reshaping nuclear physics.

Independence for Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Stalin consolidates power. Political extremism in Europe, and massive infrastructure achievements. Japan invaded Manchuria.

The previous Chiron in Taurus 1876 to 1883 fell in the middle of the two decade Long Depression from 1870 to 1890.

History is constantly churning no matter what is going on in the celestial sphere though from the above there seems to be a pattern of economic peaks and then troughs; plus significant scientific advances especially in medicine. And in the recent two Chiron in Taurus increasing campaigns for environmental protection.

  1. I have natal Chiron in Taurus conjunct my IC. It was discovered when I was nearly 4 months old. It has always been disconnection from fixed earth. Themes from the abrupt shift from have to have not. Warm and safe then bam! the wolf is at the door but there is no door anymore.

I have the path out with Chiron opposition to Scorpio Uranus. Rising from the Phoenix ashes and reinvention.

Not being able to trust the ground beneath your feet and the liberation from combined weight of what has been. That is the 1977 Chiron opposition to Uranus. A phoenix aspect.

  2. It’s possible that the iconography of Chiron can give us some clues as to his meaning. As a being who is half human (rational) and half horse (instinctual), in our charts he may represent the wholeness of integrating id and superego, but he is also shown carrying various slain animals over his shoulder – our wounded aspects – as well as holding a bow, lyre or medicinal herb. These items represent the tools of wisdom, knowledge of medicine and skills. Out of our wounds can come wisdom and learning. He is the patron of astrology, herbalism, and surgery.

The astrological glyph for Chiron is a “K” shape (representing the letter ‘k’ and the astronomer who found him, (Charles Kowal) which strongly resembles a key. When we accept our wounds we unlock the ability to heal ourselves and others. He may also represent that which is outside of the mainstream, where we feel rejected or misunderstood, the aspects of ourselves which are different for whatever reason, or marginalised groups. I have noticed that he is often combined with personal planets in the charts of Transgender people for example.

On a slightly different topic, Chiron was making an exact conjunction with Pluto in Sagittarius at the dawning of our century. This may be seen as a signature of our century, a profound ideological and religious wound or trauma, characteristic of our painfully divided century.

    • And just another snippet – Charles T. Kowal who discovered the asteroid just happened to have a Chiron/Pluto conjugation in Leo, right at the top of his chart conjunct his Midheaven. Sometimes astrology can be literal!

    • Just reading Liz’s book and she states the legends of Chiron have him as:
      a) teacher-healer
      b) hunter – explains the slain animals
      c) lover – he was married to Khariklo*
      d) a prophet / seer

      * “Chariklo, like Chiron, orbits between Saturn and Uranus (10199 Chariklo). It was discovered by James V. Scotti in 1997. Chariklo, which is larger than Chiron, has rings like those of Saturn”

  3. I’d like to add this interpretation of Chiron from the late Dennis Elwell (Cosmic Loom author). I started thinking about those rings forming around it, and do wonder if we will see another ‘face’ of this strange comet/asteroid/enigma. I was also wondering about how we shade interpretations of planets during retrogrades, the Moon’s phases, and so on. Maybe Chiron has more nuance or complexity to reveal? Personally, I’ve noticed it can act as a catalyst of some sort when transits to natal Chiron, or aspects by tr Chiron are activated. Perhaps that’s like the start of a course of study?

Anyway, here’s Dennis Elwell, in an interview on skyscript.co.uk:

“But when you are dealing with Chiron in practical work it is better to remember that his mythological namesake conducted a school for heroes. In Cosmic Loom, back in 1987, I described Chiron as ‘a provocative planet that quite enjoys giving things a stir, but which above all gives the audacity to attempt.’ As old Chiron trains us up towards accomplishments we never thought we could achieve, we need to be able to take the dare, to have an irreverent disrespect for the wise ones who say this or that can’t be done. Chiron’s style borders on cocky impudence, but perhaps its basic function is to persuade us that nothing is impossible.

The provocative side of Chiron is apt to show itself strongly in combination with Mars. Hitler was born with these bodies in close parallel, as well as septile. There are a lot of quintiles in his chart – the signature of an effective will – and the quintile between Chiron and Mercury is relevant to how he talked his way to power.”

  4. Chiron seems to be the only planetoid which really affects me by transit these days so I was intrigued enough by Chiron moving into Taurus where it will go over my Ascendant to buy a copy of Liz Greene’s “Chiron in Love” which was updated in 2023. Having now received it I’m not sure it was quite what I’m expecting as I’m not in love and it is full of synastry stuff. Nonetheless it is based on seminars Liz gave in 2005 and 2020 and I like those kind of texts as the dialogues with audiences contain more realistic explanations than a book of perfect monologue.

  5. Thanks for looking at this Marjorie. It is hard to pin down what could be Chiron related. I do think of it in Aries (Mars’ sign) as contributing to the focus on wounds around masculinity and concepts like the “manosphere”, “toxic masculinity” etc. Looking ahead, natally I have Chiron in Taurus and in my research what has resonated is the idea of a wound to how we experience our body and our senses, that our basic connection to grounding in this world is denied to us in some way at an early stage and we struggle to get it back.

No conclusions then, just speculation on its move to a feminine sign as well as whether we will become (even more) disconnected to the earth through our use of technology (lack of touch etc). Environmentally it does feel ominous.

    • Louisa Thanks. That is a good thought. Have added wounded masculinity to the main text for ease of finding later.,

    • > whether we will become (even more) disconnected to the earth through our use of technology (lack of touch etc). Environmentally it does feel ominous.

100% agreed. Really insightful comment, Louisa. Thank you!

  6. It might be worth considering Chiron’s role in joining Saturn and Uranus as it orbits between them? Some blend of old and new, pragmatic and inventive emerges? It is a strange, hybrid object. Also, in astronomy world, Chiron is developing rings! The role of mythical Chiron as a famous teacher may perhaps increase or be more noticeable? As the object itself changes, then a new layer of interpretation may unfold.

“A team of Brazil-based astronomers found that the bands of material orbiting around (2060) Chiron, a 125-mile-wide (200 kilometers wide) object that circles the sun between Saturn and Uranus, are new and still taking shape. The findings suggest that Chiron’s surroundings are in a transitional state somewhere between a chaotic cloud of debris and a fully formed ring system, offering scientists a rare snapshot of ring formation in progress, which has never been directly witnessed before.” livescience.com

  7. Chiron in Taurus will be joined by Saturn during the Saturn/Pluto square of 2028. I wonder what implications that has for climate change, agriculture and the global economy.

  8. Marjorie, i think the example you gave relates to Chiron in Aries, 1968 – 76, whereas Chiron was in Taurus 1977 – 83, which coincided with the late 70s downturn and early Thatcher years/Reagan years and unemployment. Also, ‘77 was the year Chiron was discovered.

      • Chiron entered Taurus at the end of May 1976 about 2 months after Harold Wilson resigned as UK Prime Minister. He was replaced by Jim Callaghan after a Labour Party leadership race. The new Prime Minister was immediately faced by a Sterling and government debt crisis which eventually forced the government to seek an emergency loan from the IMF in December 1976. The long term political and economic repercussions lasted until 1979 when Margaret Thatcher was elected. She came to power as Uranus was conjunct the UK 2nd House Neptune at 18 Scorpio and Chiron was moving to conjunct the UK 8th House Mars at 11 Taurus at the end of May 1979. Some echoes of those events now though it perhaps wont have quite the same impact of 1976 as Uranus is moving out of the UK financial 8th House in 2027. I suspect the biggest challenge will be when Chiron and Saturn both move to conjunct the UK Mars in 2029.

Worth noting that during the transit of Chiron through Taurus in the early 1930s the Labour Party split when Ramsey Macdonald formed a National Government with the Liberal and Conservative Parties in 1931. This was also the year when the UK left the Gold Standard.

        • The 1931 Labour split can also be attributed to the transit of Neptune (dissolving/illusory energy) to the mutable T-Square in the 1900 Labour Party chart (which I personally find is the more accurate chart for the party). In 1979 Neptune was also transiting the same T-Square. Neptune is currently in Aries and its last transit to the Labour 1900 chart T-Square was in the late 2010s during the Corbyn era; it will not be transiting the T-Square again until the 2050s. So the Labour natal chart will not be experiencing the same sort of energies as it was in 1931 and 1979.

          • The main transit to the Labour 1900 chart I can think of for those times would be Chiron opposite the Labour chart’s Moon; but then again Chiron has made other hard aspects to the Labour Moon over the last century and not all of them have corresponded to much happening. Pluto will also be conjunct the 1900 chart’s Moon in a few years so that will be another energy to deal with as well.

          • To be honest I find the 1906 chart much more descriptive of elections wins and losses – 1997 and 1979.

          • I tend to use the 1900 chart for the Labour movement as a whole and the 1906 chart for the Parliamentary Labour Party. The Chiron transit of Taurus seems particularly relevant to the UK 1801 charts which had Uranus and the North Node passing over the natal North Node at 14 Aries in 1931. Saturn will reach that same degree just 7 days after Chiron enters Taurus on 19 June 2026 and start a retrograde at that degree in July of this year. It will not cross it direct again until March 2027. At the time of the Chiron ingress into Taurus Mars will be at 23 degrees of that sign exactly square the UK natal Saturn at 23 Leo.

  9. Looking at the dates, what struck me was the Chinese 60 year cycle with this year being the fire horse so will have to check my ephemeris was the fire horse also chiron in Taurus?

  10. Environmental protection ties into Chiron’s themes of recognising a wounded Earth and trying to heal it. Maybe something similar might happen with regards to certain aspects of climate change, or from a UK perspective the pollution of rivers with sewage?

Not sure what to make of the economic angle since the global economy isn’t doing great anyway.

Note how at the end of the two previous Chiron in Taurus periods new ideas for the direction of society turned up at the end of them (1976 = free market capitalism, Mao died setting China on a new path, Thatcher became Conservative leader the year before – I would also say that Carter becoming US President had the potential to put the US on a more environmentally friendly direction, except that Reagan also came into prominence as well at that time, so there was a battle of ideas going on there) and 1933 (Hitler and FDR, with very different ideas on how to set a direction for their societies, also as noted above Stalin’s consolidation of power). Not sure if there’s anything from the early 1880s that springs to mind in that regard though. As Marjorie notes it depends on what the other planets are doing as well.

    • Given that Marjorie did I think in an earlier post note that the 2033 US Presidential inauguration chart was quite dynamic then it suggests the US will at the end of the Chiron in Taurus period find a firm direction to proceed in, much like it did a century previously with FDR – hopefully it will be in a similarly positive sense.

  11. Should I panic again??? Chiron return in a few years time. But my Chiron had already suffered at the hand of Uranus in Taurus transit. I will need to check if saturn in Taurus will hit it first or after chiron return.

    • maybe go with Dennis Elwell’s school of heroes?

(1976-83 were a complete wash rince and spin cycle for me. Hoping the interim years have taught me enough to not ‘repeat’)

      🙂
